From the House of Ill

The bad news about being sick is that you aren't strong enough or focused enough to do anything productive, but just lying there gives you a headache and drives you nuts after awhile. I have certainly gotten in my sleep; napping during the day, going to bed early at night, sleeping in during the morning, trying to give my body its rest. But while your body is a little weak, your mind can get going on all sorts of stuff. Well, MY mind can get going on all sorts of stuff, I guess I can't say if anyone else's does that. :) So let's see. These are some of the things I have spent time thinking about today.

  • A five year old boy accidentally shot and killed his four-year-old sister with a handgun that had the clip taken out, but a bullet left in the chamber accidentally. He's now in child protective services, and I have unsuccessfully tried to block imagining what he will go through as he gets older.

  • A friend started a new job today. That's always kind of exciting and kind of nerve-wracking at the same time. It sounded like a good place with good people, and I hope it is.

  • The guys are flying to Muncie to try out the new restaurant today for lunch, and even if I wasn't too sick to care, I am picturing them locking the doors and gunning the engines and leaving my contagious rear end sitting on the ramp. ;)

  • Devon's birthday is coming up. It always kind of sneaks up on you. You feel something 'off', you can tell something is niggling at you, and then it occurs to you what that is. You start thinking about what ten year old boys would like, you try to picture what he'd be like now at the countdown to his double-digit birthday, imagine what activities he would be into and good at, wonder if he'd be too old to hug now, you let yourself smile, feel the sadness, and then you move forward, again.

  • I don't watch the news very often because it is so terribly sad. I'm sitting here writing this with no choice but the news to watch, and what I've seen in the last few minutes are (again) the boy that shot his sister, an 11-year-old who was arrested for dealing drugs, and a toddler who drowned in his grandparents' swimming pool. What a horrible nightmare. I would rather learn to watch soap operas than this; at least I can laugh at the bad acting and ridiculous plot lines there. There's nothing amusing at all about the news. It takes a stronger constitution than I have today to sit there and listen to tragedy after tragedy...people's lives as they knew it are over forever, as described by a 15-second blurb on Channel 12. It's just...sad.

  • Kaylee made a "Get Well Soon" card for Steve the other night, and she drew a rainbow and sunshine on it, and taped chocolate hearts to the paper to finish it off. She's such a sweetie and a joy and she has a kind heart. She is like the little firecracker in our family, all flash and bang and sparkle and sometimes after the smoke clears you look around and wonder what hit you. :)

  • I have gotten SO bad at writing real letters to loved ones. I get behind on thank you notes, which is just flat-out Rude of me. Maybe I should print out my blog for a week and mail it off as a "this is what I'm doing" kind of thing. Or maybe not. That's rather impersonal. *sigh* I've got to get better at that.

  • How am I going to be able to stand being here or not being here when I have a cleaning crew come into my house for the first time coming up here? How weird do I feel? Yes, fairly weird in fact.

  • This is a little bit of an "interesting" article. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

  • Some baseball field is doing a promotion where the winner will receive a full funeral package, valued at over $10,000. Plot, casket, vault, service and all. Now, I grant you that is a valuable service and one every person on the planet will need, but that has got to be the single most strange "promotion" I've ever heard of. I guess their goal is accomplished, then! This leads my wandering mind to something that bugs me. He said someone would receive a spot in the 'garden'. Cemeteries these days call the plots "gardens". I'm sorry, but that just bugs me. Not to be macabre, but that brings to my mind...things I guess I won't spell out. I don't like the flat little places with plastic flowers sticking up in rows that they call a "garden". Unfortunately the days of tombstones that can be seen without standing on top of them and cemeteries with iron fences and large oak trees and rolling hills and character are going by the wayside and 'gardens' are "in". Our family is in a 'garden' for the most part, and in the end it doesn't matter, but aesthetically I love the old style.

Oh, that's enough. That's the general idea of where my unfettered mind starts wandering to when I can't be doing anything productive. Even writing this is taking me forever because of my low concentration levels. I'll probably reread it after I'm well and make a new rule for myself to go along with the "No writing emails, letters or blog posts after 2 a.m." rule I instituted many years ago after noticing a trend of high "sap" factor in messages after that time frame. ;)

Let's see. Steve is going back to work for the first time in five days, Kaylee is still fine and is in school, and I am probably going to have to take another nap, as even sitting here on my duff and typing and thinking briefly has worn me out.

May your Monday be full of pleasant thoughts, good health, and good spirits. :)

Here are some quotes to end the day...

----------------------------------------------

"Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things. I am tempted to think there are no little things."
~Bruce Barton

"Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day. It is the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads us to either fortune or failure."
~Jim Rohn

"It takes less time to do things right than to explain why you did it wrong."
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"Believe there is a great power silently working all things for good, behave yourself and never mind the rest."
~Beatrix Potter
