Little Bits of Nothing Special

Would all five of you readers like to know a couple of my embarrassing little secrets? Some of you will already know-after all, it's a little hard to hide stuff like that from say a spouse of almost 12 years, or a mother. And the rest of you probably already had it figured out anyway, but there's just something liberating about admitting it. ;) So in the spirit of Top Tens everywhere, without ten items, here are:

Laura's List of Slightly Embarrassing (to her) Little Secrets:

1. Dumb Underdog Movies Actually Get to Me. Disney channel, Disney cartoons, After-School Specials, Bring It, Mighty Ducks, Youngblood, Rocky, (in a more action-figure realm, even the one-against-the-world movies like Rambo, Lethal Weapon, or former Steven Segal movies, or Van Damm stuff), the Whole 9 Yards; if there is a person (or talking animal) who is struggling under great odds, particularly if it's a child, or if it's someone risking everything to follow a dream, and the whole world is stacked against them and it seems impossible and they just don't give up...I swear, it gets to me every time. I sat here and watched "Little Giants" today, for no reason I can determine, which is a movie about an underdog football team of losers who beat the big bad team because they finally believed in themselves...and ended up wiping my eyes. *sigh* That is SUCH a cliché. I hate being a cliché. However, I can't help it. Underdog movies in any genre always get me. The romantic comedy where the nerdy guy finally wins the heart of the beauty queen but then realizes that she's not half the person of the sweet, smart, pretty girl next door who cares about him for who he is not just because he's now popular and they live happily ever after. The action movie where the bad guys are going to wipe out a town and nobody can stop them until...dum du DUM...one guy comes along with the courage to stand up to them. ("Roadhouse" was always a favorite of mine). Any animated Disney or Pixar movie you can think of. Dumb sporting event movies like of all things the cheerleading one, the gymnastics one, the dancing one, the drumming line one, the ice skating one, the hockey one, and yes, the football ones. So now you know my embarrassing little secret...those goofy Underdog movies make me internally cheer and occasionally (when in the appropriate genre) sniffle. I know Stephanie knows this, since as teenagers she and I literally jumped up and down in the living room watching "Youngblood" with Rob Lowe, screaming "GO! GO! GO!" at the television. Is it good or is it bad to know people who knew you when you were very young?? ;)

2. I do like jewelry. I don't buy hardly any of it, I don't wear hardly any of it, I don't even go looking at it in general, nor do I want to walk around with a bunch of it; but yes, there is a touch of that girl gene in here. I got my wedding ring back today, and it was clean and sparkly and I've looked at it 20 times since I put it on. Which reminded me of when it was first put on my finger, and I was at Purdue, and it would sparkle in the lighting in those rooms, and I would find myself staring at my ring and turning it this way and that just to watch it shine. So yes, I like pretty baubles too. *sigh*

3. I have a hard time not trying to help someone, even if I shouldn't. Maybe especially if I shouldn't. I don't in general have problems saying "no" in life, work, or whatever, but if it's someone that I think just needs a chance, or a break, or they're an 'underdog' in any sense of the word, then...I tend to get myself in over my head. I don't want to be the one to give up on a person, and I don't want to be another reason for disappointment in their life, so my embarrassing little secret is that while it's not my norm, I have been sometimes...an actual spineless pushover.

4. I can't spell the words 'embarrassing' or 'definitely'. Spell-checker has to get those almost every time I write them. I don't know why, but those two words just do not click in my brain.

I only have a few more embarrassing little secrets, so I'd better keep those to myself for now. ;)

This morning we enjoyed sleeping in and then Steve made everybody breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. A nice way to wake up after a late night and late morning. :) He had some flights today, and Kaylee and I ran a couple of errands and played "Aloha Island" in the bathtub. I don't think anything of much importance will be happening the rest of the day, and that's not a bad thing at all. A quiet weekend day with those important to you is one of the best ways I can think of to spend time. :)
