Made It

Tuesday was a really long day. I woke up at 4:45 am, didn’t need to be up until 5:15, but those mornings where I know I have to get up early, my brain wakes me up every couple of hours wondering if it’s time to get up yet.

Morgan and I met up at Frankfort, flew the Cirrus over to Delphi, picked up Stephen, and I flew him to Henderson, KY. Once there, he looked at a project for an hour or so, and then he picked up two more guys, and I stayed in KY while Morgan flew the three of them to Madison, IN. They were going to be gone at least 3 hours, so I took a crew car into town and ended up eating at a place called “Crust and Roll”, which is a combination pizza and sushi joint. You read that right. Pizza and sushi. And they even had a pizza with sushi on it. Ha. Their lunch special was a tiny cheese pizza and a classic sushi roll together. Inside they had Japanese decor with flowers and such, and also old Italian pizza stuff on the walls. So weird, man. But actually both foods were very good. The pizza was super cheesy with a homemade crust. So…weird but good.

I then tried to take a nap in the pilot room for a bit. It was a fairly quiet room and I got pretty drowsy, but I don’t know that I went out out. It was a decent rest though. When Morgan got back, I flew us back to Delphi to drop off Stephen, and then flew us home to Frankfort. By then it was late in the day, we’d already both been up since early dawn, and we weren’t done yet.

We had both packed our stuff the night before and put them in our cars. So we drove right from Frankfort out to Kokomo, pulled out the Aerostar, and flew straight to Oshkosh. Arrived at Fond du Loc at 8 pm or so, 30 min before the tower closed, and texted AE who came and got us and brought us back to camp. Hung out for a couple hours with folks before crashing in our trailer.

Our trailer has a SUPER tall bed. We can’t climb into it! You have to flop up on it like a fish and kick your legs. I can’t do that with my knee, so I borrowed a step stool from Gail, and finally I can get in and out of bed on my own without Steve hauling me up after I leap. HA. I should have gotten a video of that…

Today was a fairly quiet day. I tried out my red scooter. It is not great. First, I feel and look ridiculous. Secondly, it has no shock absorbers, so these back roads with gravel and hills and grass and bumps are Rough. Third, it’s slow, so someone can walk next to me easily, but I can’t travel very far very fast on it. It’s better than walking, on my knee, but I hate needing it and I don’t want to need to use it ever again. Tomorrow I’m going to try to wear my knee brace and get a golf cart ride up and see how much walking I can manage if I go slow and easy.

Morgan walked next to me on the scooter and took a photo or two. Because I look ridiculous. We are going to use a different shower than the one closest to us. The one closest to us only has one curtain, so you have to get undressed basically in public, and then it’s a tiny shower and the curtain doesn’t cover the whole thing. There are gaps on both sides, so walking by you can see everyone in there showering. That’s…not good. So we went shower house hunting and found an old one with two curtains (a changing area that’s private). It’s far away and will require a golf cart ride, but it’s the better alternative.

The camp site is good, most of our folks are here now, Chuck just arrived, and we have a few things to do. Tonight is a Tom Woods cookout over in Warbirds, tomorrow is the Gunfighter Burger Burn. I’m not sure I feel like going to either, but Steve insists Morgan and I need to, even though he’s not going and doesn’t want to. We’ll see.  I decided that next year, if I still have the T-6, I’m taking it to Dubuque again for a clinic, and flying it at OSH one more time. By then I should have Morgan checked out in it too, and maybe she’ll try to go along and get formation practice and such in it too. Sounds like a nice plan.

I’ll randomly update if anything happens out here…
