Off and Running

And off we go, man.

Wednesday I took the Cirrus and flew Tell around to Illinois. Dropped him off at Pekin, IL and picked him up in Bloomington, then dropped him back off at Delphi before flying to Exec and then driving back to Kokomo. I took the T-6 out then and was trying to do some currency takeoffs and landings, but the pattern was full on Runway 32, and it took me forever just to do four of them, so I gave up. My second landing, I touched down and my seat dropped. So that was exciting. Fortunately it just dropped one notch, but it still takes you aback. I was trying to get ready for my new student, but I didn't get much of that done. Then I went up with Jerry Keller, and finished his Flight Review. We had one scary landing where he leveled off and flared way too high, but other than that, he was back in the saddle again, and the last one was a pretty one. It was great to see him flying again, and Steve got him in the front seat, and I signed him off, and now he can go fly on his own again, all current and legal and everything.
The cirrus shines Cirrus logos on the ground like fancy cars.

This was my transponder code. Is that bad? ;)

It was a pretty weather day. Meanwhile Morgan had a crappy stormy day. Hahaha

Thursday I was up at 5 am (again) and this time taking off with Terry M from MBros to Burke Lakefront in Cleveland. We were supposed to be there about 2-3 hours. We were there for 5.5 hours. I went to a place called Danny's Diner I was referred to. It was a hole in the wall, in a little more sketchy area, but the food was good. But after that I just waited at the airport because I thought they were coming back at any moment. There was nowhere to go to rest, and I was really beat. They didn't show up until 1 pm and we landed at 7:30 am. That was a long start. From there I took them down to West Virginia. Little mountain place surrounded by trees and hills. Not my smoothest landing, gusty swappy winds that turned to a tailwind, but folks on the ground took photos of us coming in to land. Looked good on film anyway. ;)

I got back at 6:30 pm, and had a lot to deal with on BOB and the Air Power Tour. One of the guys took a tour of the runway in BOB, didn't hurt anything or depart the runway, but called the CAF himself to tell them, and they told HQ about it, and then we had to have a Board Meeting at 8:30 pm when I was so tired I was about to cry, and it is just a gift that keeps giving. I had to be on a phone call about it this afternoon too. Tis great.

This morning I slept in until like 8 am, sort of. I got up at 8 am anyway. Spent a couple hours trying to get caught up before it was time to go out to the airport. We were trying to fix the T-6 seat so it wouldn't drop on the new guy. He arrived at 1:30, and I showed him around the facility, sat down with the manual and went over some groundschool, had him do the preflight, sat in the cockpit and went over everything in it, and then everyone went home and he and I went up for a 1 hour flight. He had flown T-6s before but not since last Fall, and mostly was a seat warmer, not the pilot. He'd said he had a decent amount of T-6 time but needed an insurance approved checkout. We get in the air, and he's not coordinated. Small turns he's skidding around. I worked on that a little bit with him. We went and did steep turns, slow flight, which he said he'd never done before, and just some general maneuvering. And then I had him go back to the pattern for some landings. He actually didn't do too bad on the wheel landings, and we did three of them, fighting two other airplanes in the pattern on Runway 32 the whole time. After 1.1 I called it and we brought it in, put it away, secured it, sat in the hangar and talked for awhile. He knows all these high time big name T-6 pilots, and had flown a lot with them, and I asked him if he'd done the stall series, I assumed, and he said no, he'd ridden through a couple but they'd all told him he needed to go do that "with someone else". Aka me. Well, all right. So tomorrow we're supposed to have high ceilings, and I'm going to take him up and hope for the best on all these stalls. Should be "entertaining". We have 8.9 hours left to fly. Wish me luck. Or pray for me. Or something. ;)

Left there, and Morgan and I went to the Coterie to eat dinner. Except we walked in and it was CHAOS in there. Huge crowds, loud music, loud talking, standing room only. I noped out of there so damn fast. We walked across the way to Cook McDougal's, and there was a sign on the door that said they were closed until "the authorities" let them open again. What?! Like the health department or what?? Yikes. So we walked another .3 or .4 to Sokuri's. I sort of regretted that choice. My ahi tuna tacos were good and so was the espresso creme brulet, but there was a whole lot of odd food there that neither Morgan nor I even knew what it was, and they gave us some pre-meal set of six appetizers as part of it, kimchi and bean sprouts and spicy cabbage and...I have no idea. But no thank you for next time. I didn't know 90% of the menu. lol

Welp, time to try to get to sleep and be ready for tomorrow and all it will bring...
