This morning I took Steve and Morgan up to Oshkosh to drop them off for the week. The plane was fairly well loaded with full fuel and the three of us, plus Steve's bags. It was reporting 200' overcast all around the area, but the visibility wasn't bad. So I took off, and hand flew the departure like I like to do, to stay proficient. I broke out on top, and engaged the autopilot, only it wouldn't come on. Checking the circuit breakers showed that the autopilot breaker had popped. I had Steve reset it once, and then as soon as I tried turning on the autopilot again, it popped. Well that's all there is to do about that. So I got to hand fly the whole time. That would be an emergency for some, but it was just an annoyance and an extra work load into the world's busiest airport for the week. They told me to expect the visual, but I looked up the RNAV anyway, because being prepared usually works better, and sure enough, at the end they cleared me to a waypoint on the approach and cleared me straight in on it. So much for visual. But I landed just short of the orange dot on Runway 27 at Oshkosh, went to Basler, and dropped off Steve and MOrgan, who were picked up by AE. I hopped back in the airplane and it took me a good half an hour to get back out of there, and I was only #2 in line! lol Good ole Oshkosh.
Taking off out of there, they give me runway heading, a departure frequency, then tell me "we have an amendment to your clearance", and I have to write down and copy a new clearance while I'm hand flying while I'm changing radio frequencies. It was a high work load, and the exact reason I practice a lot of hand flying in busy airspace on purpose.
I flew home at 7000', shot the RNAV 23 into Kokomo, went through some big buildups, hand to hand fly in a lot of turbulence, and finally was done after an already long day, done by 1:30 p.m.
When I got home, it was take care of the cat, and Ann, and get the guest bedroom ready for Cathy time. I wanted to make my crepes but my headache has bothered me all afternoon, so I've just been relaxing a little this evening, and getting ready for the next few days. Early tomorrow I get up, get Ann, fly to DuPage, IL in the airplane without an autopilot, and give rides in BOB all day. Home in the evening in time to get Ann if need be, or not if Cathy arrives early enough.
I'm watching a movie called "Radioflash", a 2019 movie about a father and daughter who take to the hills to try to meet up with her grandpa (who her dad thought was crazy) after an EMP goes off in the US (showing grandpa wasn't so crazy) to survive as society starts collapsing. The girl is quite smart at problem solving and survival skills too. I don't know how it ends, yet.
Pics are pretty self-explanatory.
