I HAVE to start with the weather because it impacted the whole day. ;) When I woke up, it was to a text from Glenn who lives in IL to say he couldn't come fly BOB today because his runway was a sheet of ice. The 3300' long runway I was going into to pick up Kaylee was 7 miles away from his runway, and it too was a sheet of ice. Every airport within an hour drive had braking action of nil, known these days as a FICON (Field Conditions) of 1/1/1. I'm not going into a 3300' runway in a twin with no brakes. In fact, since I'm neither at war nor even being paid for it, I'm not doing it at a longer runway either this time, especially with winds gusting to 30 knots. I later found out that another kid leaving today, their airline flight out of Chicago was also canceled twice, same reason. I pulled up Google Maps, and if I left Right Then, I could still make it in time in the car. So I began the three hour drive over. Originally it said I'd arrive at 11:47 am, and I was supposed to be there at noon. Perfect. I drive fast, so I gained up to 11:40 am, then stopped for lunch, fuel and a bathroom. Arrived at Kaylee's lodge at 11:55 am central time. Perfect. ;)
Kaylee and I loaded up her stuff into the Buick, then stopped at McCallister's for a sandwich/salad for Kaylee, and hit the three hour drive back home. The roads weren't as icy as the runways, plenty of cars and sunshine to sublimate the ice off.
So, Kaylee's home, missing some of her friends and feeling a little out of place as you always do after you spend a month somewhere with the same group of people you come to get close to. We're watching Ocean's 8 and relaxing with Roadie and a blanket on her lap with a pecan cinnamon roll from Cinnabun for dessert.
