The Mondays

I was supposed to fly this morning, but the clouds were too low, so we rescheduled and I went to lunch as normal, just Steve and I.   Right after lunch the ceilings lifted barely enough, and I went up on a test flight in Larry's T-6. The last time I flew it, I got the chip detector light on.  Eric the mechanic had said "If you see the chip light go off now, believe it!" So that was a little tense until I got on the ground.  (The chip detector lets you know it's picking up foreign material that your engine is ingesting, aka a likely engine failure at any moment.)  Well, this chip detector was probably getting contamination by some oil, so they think they fixed that again.  Anyway, so I took it up for a test flight today, staying over the airport, and all was well.

From there I went out to Glenndale and flew Chuck's Citabria with Spencer doing a checkout with him.  All of a sudden a bunch of pop up stuff happened on the weather. We got a little wet, both in the airplane and getting fuel over at Kokomo. We did concrete and grass strip landings, a little crosswind, not much. Slow flight, turns, power off stalls. It went pretty well.  I saw rainbows, rain showers, dark skies, sunny ground spots, and it was a pretty day to be up and about, even though it wasn't a pretty weather day.

Afterwards Steve, Chuck, me and Spencer went to Pastarrific for dinner. Except they're closed on Mondays, which I already know and always forget what day it is.  So we went to Mi Familia instead and I had a mango daquiri to go with dinner, because I can.

Tomorrow is a fly-over for our friend and mechanic Eric's father's funeral. I wish I had more airplanes to do a formation fly-over, but I couldn't get it, so it's just me, but he's glad to have even just me.

The state police are out at the Kokomo airport doing track racing around our parking lot and ramp area. When I took the T-6 up, they all stopped and stared when I went by.  I guess one of them asked the fueler "who is that in that airplane and is she cool?" They asked if they could come back and see the plane, and he said sure, so two of them headed back to visit.  I thought it was funny, two state police guys pulled up in a police truck and they weren't there to pull me over for once.  Side note. Two nights ago I did a night flight, and on my way home, the main road through town is blocked off heading south, so you have to turn right, and it was 11:30 pm and nobody was around but me and an SUV on the crossing road. He had a red light, I had a red light, nobody could come any other way, so I turned right on red even though the sign says "no right turn on red".  The one other car anywhere around, the SUV, was police, who pulled me over.  I stopped right away, kept my hands up, let him know there was nothing interesting in my glove compartment when I got my registration out. He said I turned right on red when I shouldn't, I said I know, I figured the logic was that there was no good reason not to, he laughed and said it was still posted not to, and then he ran my stuff, and didn't give me a ticket.  So, whew. ;)

But these two got up in the T-6, took pictures, one said to the other "Give me your best fighter pilot look!"  We talked airplanes, cars, manual vehicles, searching for human remains from the air, and other various interesting topics, before he said "I'm so glad I came back here, you never know what you'll run into, and I had no idea there were three WWII airplanes back here in the middle of nowhere in Kokomo".  And I met two enjoyable state police fellows.  Spencer later said I should've asked them to take the Corvette out on the track they have set up.  That would have been fun.  :D

As I was typing this, I got a message that the P-51 from Indy can make it up.  I'm excited, except the forecast for tomorrow down there is IFR.  :/  Up here it's questionable, and in the area of the fly-over, it should be okay.  I was going to do it anyway if the weather was good enough to be even sketchy, but down in Indy it looks like solid IFR.  We'll have to see.  It would be awesome if he could make it. I'd love it for them.

My quick hop in the T-6 this afternoon.

Mr. Bones yee-hawing it.

Rainbows

You can sort of see the fading rainbow off the wingtip over there

And more rain and clouds.
