Same Stuff New Year?

Well, we've got 2020 in the rear view mirror, where hopefully it will stay.  It was definitely a weird one, but I'm honestly a lot more bothered by what's happened in the country than I am by the virus itself.  I'm not typically someone who gets too worked up about politics and such, but boy.  What a wild, weird, kind of scary ride we're all on.

New Years Eve, Kaylee went up to Goshen with Mer to visit her sort of boyfriend Logan, and some of his family and other friends were there too.  They were all planning on staying up there and coming back New Years' Day.  But Thursday night, the forecast for Friday turned nasty, with sleet, freezing rain, slick roads.  It looked like it was going to be bad most of the day.  So Kaylee and Meredith on their own decided to come home.  They were worried about driving home on New Year's Eve thanks to drunk drivers, but they were more worried about driving home in sleet the next day.  So they left around 1:30 am, and it's a two hour drive.  Kaylee said they were driving down an empty highway road at 3 am, and a car passed them going the other direction, then suddenly turned around in the road and started following them, very closely.  Kaylee was doing 60 in a 55, but when that car got right up on her, the girls got nervous, wondering if it was someone about to try to run them off the road, or being weird, or what.  So she sped up to 65.  That's when the officer lit up his lights and pulled her over.  She said she didn't tell him that she only sped up because he made her nervous getting right up on her like that.  I said she should have.  He said she was doing 65 in a 45.  She said "It's 55", and her GPS right there showed it a 55 mph stretch.  She later figured out that coming from the other direction, it had been 45 for awhile, but where she was, it was 55.  She was right.  She said he was also brusque and gruff and short.  I told her it's 3 am on New Year's Eve, you can only imagine what he's afraid of having to deal with, and she understood that too.  Anyway, he didn't end up giving her a ticket, gave her a warning and a lecture, and she got home around 3:30 am, safe and sound.  Her first "adventure" with a police officer.  I was a lot younger than she is when I got pulled over the first time.  In fact I was pulled over a good 8 times before I ever got even a warning ticket. She does a good job following the rules.  If I was alone on a back stretch of deserted highway, I'd have been modocking.  That's code for driving at the speed of sound.  ;)  But we told her that at her age, she's not experienced enough to drive crazy, and that if she gets a ticket, it's worse on her record, and our insurance, and that she just can't.  I told her this is one she'll have to do as we say and not as we do, that it's not fair, but when she's 40 and on her own insurance, if she wants to speed, she can too.  She does a good job, and that night it turned out to be a good thing, because she didn't end up getting a ticket, because she really didn't do anything wrong.  She's a good kid.

Meanwhile, Steve and AE and I went out to eat at Grains and Grill.  Delicious food, good wine, good company, then came back home and hung out and watched the TV ball stuff on mute with good music playing over the system, more beverages and snacks, watched the ball fall, stayed up until 2 am to usher in the new year.

New Year Day it just sleeted.  We slept in, we didn't go anywhere, we watched a TV show called "Longmire", started with Season 1 episode 1 and went onward.  We binge-watched.  It's a good show, and best of all, there are no politics or preaching in it.  It's a western style sheriff story with a lot of good plot lines, good action, intelligent observations, engaging and interesting.

The weather has just been awful.  Icy, cloudy, IFR, bleh.  So, I haven't flown all year.  Har Har.  Tomorrow I was supposed to go with Kaylee and Caitlyn in the Aerostar to Terre Haute, meet up with a group of pilots, and fly off to lunch in a gaggle.  It was going to be fun.  Instead it's going to be IFR, cloudy and icy.  So...that's a no.  If it gets good enough later, I need to take the Cheyenne up and around, and if it doesn't happen Sunday, hopefully Monday morning will work, as Monday afternoon I fly Leslie to NYC.

AE left his credit card in Fairmont on NYE, so tonight the three of us went back to pick it up, and while we were there we ate at the Bad Dad's Pub, which has excellent pizza.

I guess it's about time to start taking down Christmas decorations.  I like some of the lights.  We might have to leave some of those up for longer.  Ann feels the same way about the lights, and about Mom's nativity scene that we put up over there.  No reason to rush on taking them down, for a dreary rest of the winter...
