Hello Darkness My Old Friend

Our house is de-Christmas-fied.  The lights are almost all gone, the greenery is gone, the festive mugs and candles and cards, ornaments on the tree, all gone. The tree itself is still up at the moment, and the lights in the kitchen, but everything else is looking pretty bare.  I'll miss the lights and greenery on top of the tv, the lights in the kitchen, and the lights and greenery on the deck around our door.  I like those, they brighten up the house, you know?  Make it a little less gloomy.  It's sort of depressing when they're down again.  It's like..."Here Comes January.  And then February."  Dear Lord.  I'm not sure I can handle the next two months.  I need something to do, or look forward to.  And I need to get back into better shape.  I guess that's something I can do better at over the next two months.

Kaylee leaves for school next week, and at some point now we're going to redo her room.  The last time we did it, she was off at camp, and we took it from a baby room with pink fluffy baby walls to a middle-school girl room with purples and white.  Now she's an adult, and basically moving out of the house, so we're going to put it back to a more normal room, one she can still stay in when she's here of course, but more than just her room.  I might put the treadmill in there too.  It didn't work in the front of the house because my back was to the whole house, and I was never comfortable.  On the deck, everyone going in or out or next door watches what you're doing, and that makes me uncomfortable too.  I just want to plug in a good show, be by myself with earbuds in, and lose myself in a show while I'm hiking, walking, or even lightly jogging, without the potential of an audience.  In her room I can lock the door and I'm good to go.  ;)  We may replace her bed with a day bed type thing, and we have some children's furniture we can get rid of too.  I do have the book case in there that was mine, that was repainted purple and white to be hers.  I don't feel right about just tossing that out.  We may need to restrip it and stain it or something, I don't know yet. But that's something on the list of things to do coming up.

My trip to New York tomorrow has been pushed back to Tuesday.  I'm okay with that.  Monday's weather was sort of not great, but should have been good enough, but I really would like to take the thing up once first, and the weather hasn't allowed me to do that at all.  I'm hoping it will at some point tomorrow.  Nathan was going to go with me Monday, but he's busy Tuesday, so I have an open seat.  Let the fighting begin.  ;)

Steve has gone through our pantry and completely reorganized every shelf on it, and the medicine cabinet, and the tupperware area too.  So Kaylee and I like to go through and pretend to move things around, drop them in there, shuffle things around, just all-around be pains in the butt to him.  It's nice to have it done and all organized and looking good, and able to see most things.  The only tough one is the medicine cabinet, because if it's not in the front, you can't really get to it without messing everything else up. But it's nice.

The cleaning people are coming Tuesday, so that's part of the push to get everything put away now.  It's as good a reason as any, anyway.  It'll be good to come home from my trip to NY and have a fresh smelling, newly cleaned house that I didn't have to do.

We got our guns out the other night and just ran through them.  Loading the magazine with a bunch of blanks, dry-firing, ejecting, safety, then re-loading with live rounds, just...yadda yadda running through it.  Sounds like a redneck thing to do, but if one is going to carry a gun, it's a good idea to know you're not going to fumble around with basic operations, so we do that now and then.  I really like the laser sight on mine, too.  It's kinda hard to miss if your target is lit up with a red dot.  ;)

I was at Grindestone's the other day, looking around, and just about every woman in there was 50-70, and they all had the same haircut.  Most of them dyed blond, some grey, some brunette, but all the same basic haircut.  A table of 8 of them all looking the same, across from them a table of four, all looking the same, behind them a table of two, across the way another.  Everywhere I looked, it was the same person.  Like the song "ticky tacky", little boxes all the same.  And all I could think was...I can't.  As I creep up closer to 50, I keep thinking, at some point here I should cut my hair, older women shouldn't really have long hair, and I'm thinking, at some point it's going to go all grey, and stringy long gray hair is gross, and I don't think I want to dye it all the way, I mean, why start now.  But I don't think I can do it, I don't think I can do the one close-cut-de-jour.  I have a hair stylist now, not just Great Clips walk-in appointments.  In a few more years, maybe I'll talk to her about leaving my hair longer, maybe not THIS long, but longer, and letting it go silver or white or grey or whatever it does, and keeping it looking healthy, and see if I can pull it off.  I have seen some pictures of some older ladies with longer silver hair, and I thought it looked pretty.  I don't know what I CAN do yet, but I'm pretty sure I know what I can't.

I was thinking back on 2020.  I feel like I might have said this already, but just in case.  I did get to do some good things in 2020.  We had our own NOshkosh, and enjoyed it.  I was officially checked out in a C-45, and also officially became a CFI in a C-45.  So that's pretty cool.  I finally got my FAST card.  It's funny that it was 2020 when that happened, but it did, and it's good through Dec. 2021, and whew.  I was Lead in a three-ship C-45 formation that ended up being in calendars and magazines, which I think is a first.  Normally I'm the photo ship, not the photo subject.  I finally got to see the WASP: Rise Above movie, with Kaylee and me, and that turned out pretty neat, and made me smile at the memory and the flying.  I ended up flying my 13th different T-6, which I think is neat, and no emergencies in them this year, thankyouverymuch.  On the other side, I watched my first airplane accident live and in person, and saw three people I know and care about die in a fireball.  The long term ramifications of that won't be fully known until sometime in 2021, but it will and/or has the ability to affect us, the Squirrels, the BBQ Bash, the EAA Chapter, Glenndale Airport, and a whole lot of people.  It wouldn't be an "end of year review" without mentioning it, pleasant or not.  Business has also been given some problems thanks to Covid.  Kaylee and Steve would have to write up their own year memories.  She did not enjoy the whole remote learning thing from Covid, but she's doing okay and ready to get back to it, has some good friends, and her first kind of boyfriend.  Ups and downs and ups.  Life...
