Timing is Everything

There were two more rounds of nasty storms yesterday, and that was all it took to flood out a bunch of Oshkosh.  We fared really well.  It was wet and squishy even under our fake grass on one side of the campground, and everybody just had to go barefoot and get wet feet.  The roads we're on are muddy, but not lakes, unlike a lot of other places.  Some tents are now standing in water and torn up because of the high winds, but again, not ours.  They closed the campgrounds to any new arrivals unless you already had a spot and can prove that it's on dry ground.  They had to take tractors and pull out a bunch of people who tried and learned the hard way it wasn't going to happen.  The roads into the campground were lined for miles with trailers unable to get in.  EAA then had a follow me truck take those folks to various businesses parking lots.  Hundreds, and hundreds of campers in parking lots waiting for the field to dry enough to let them in.  I just got a text that so far, that isn't today.  Still too wet.  The airport itself is also closed to arrivals unless they had prearranged parking on the hard surface.  No grass parking, no grass camping.  The ones already here, some have planes who have sunk into the mud too.  The mass formation arrivals have mostly been canceled, including the Bonanzas.  Anyone coming in will have to do so on their own, later, when it opens up.  There were 140 of them participating.  In Warbirds there are two planes out there, and the campers aren't allowed to bring their cars back to their area, so they have to hike in from a parking lot just to get to trailer.  I don't know what the T-6 formation guys are going to do.  It's a legit mess!  And yet here we sit, dry and well fed with corn bred fresh from the oven last night, cars by our trailers, free to leave to Ardy & Ed's for ice cream like we did yesterday afternoon, sitting around in our chairs and relaxing, popping open cold beverages, and watching mud-crusted people walk by.  We're doing great.  We got here early enough and in a good enough spot to hunker down and wait for the rest of the place to dry out.

A girl I know from the internet is staying in a tent a row behind us, and she showed a picture of her mangled wet tent, and said "We shall rebuild."  Someone threw children's pool floaties in the large puddles down by Vintage, and up by the North 40, people are posing with fishing poles in the puddles aka mini lakes.  Meanwhile, Tummers is whipping up some pancakes and bacon and eggs for us this morning outside the trailer.  I've had a shower.  My feet are dry.

Timing is everything.
