Steve and I have been married for 22 years now, a number which passed with little ceremony but much fondness regardless. Personally, I think we make a pretty good team, and we even actually enjoy hanging out with each other both for work and for fun. I hear from folks now and then "You guys WORK together?" and the thought horrifies them. That always cracks me up...
We didn't have much of a "holiday" out of this one. Of course it is in honor of our military men and women who didn't come home, who died in the service of their country. I learned something new today. Apparently the flag is supposed to initially be raised to the top at dawn, then lowered to half mast. Then at high noon, it is supposed to be raised back to the top of the mast until sunset. Did you know that?
Friday I flew all day. Saturday I flew all morning, then came home and changed and we went to several friends and student pilots' graduation open houses. At one of our students', Tom, we were looking at his picture board, and it said "When I grow up I want to be" and had pictures of him as a little boy doing various things like wearing a cowboy hat, and "Cowboy" was crossed out, etc. Then there were a dozen photos of him in the planes, and says "I want to be a pilot". We were looking at those, when an older gentleman said "I flew with him in that plane. He's a good pilot, careful." We smiled and said "That's good to hear, because we're his instructors." He turned around and said "You're the lady instructor." Guilty. :) But Tom is a good "stick", and I'm sure he'll do well. Another we went to is Jamie Davis' and Andrew Pratt. Jamie was like 5 when we first met him. SO WEIRD to see these kids grow up. I know everybody else has had kids and is used to that, but I'm not!
Sunday I had a few errands I had to do, including going out to Kokomo to fuel up the 340 for a trip to MI for today that D was going to do on his own, that he apparently never did. I'm billing for that, it took me 40 minutes to get there and back, and an hour to get it pulled out, fueled, preflighted, oil added, and put away, and apparently I didn't need to go. Bah Humbug. ;) It was SUUUUPER hot here today though. 96 degrees with a heat index of 98, supposedly. Maybe it was too hot for their two babies and a toddler. Something happened.... Then today Steve and I went to Menards and picked up an air conditioning unit for the deck, both to be kind to the cats and to make it more usable for him and the guys. The other day it was 100 degrees on the deck, just stifling, and that's with the windows all open and two fans running. He tried a smaller unit, and it didn't keep up at all. So we got the big one today. I went along to help him haul it around. It works! The deck is staying a nice normal temp now even though it's mega toasty outside. The cats have to appreciate that. They'd better, since I'm guessing there goes our electric bill. ;) Later this afternoon I had a flight. Did I mention it's almost 100 degrees? I sweated to death, came home and washed all the clothes I was wearing. It was this fellow's first ever flight, so that's always heavy duty too. When I left there, Steve said he needed me to stop by Menard's again and get a 10' 12/3 extension cord. I walked all over Menard's before I found the right area...right by the front door where I came in. Then I get there and they don't have what he wants. Either I can get 25' of 12/3, or I can get 10' of 14/2 or 16/3. So I spent a good 30 minutes or more texting back and forth with him on what he wanted to do, before we decided to get 25' of 12/3, and then which of the four different options of THAT he preferred. By now I was hot, tired and cranky, and it was 7:30 pm and I'm standing in Menards for the second time that day, so I stopped at Dairy Queen and got a small Blizzard on the way home and improved my attitude. ;)
Kaylee went shopping with friends, she had a party with a bonfire with friends, she is in summer vacation mode. What that means is that starting shortly here, we kick in on her flying lessons as fast as we can get to it.
That was my weekend. No family gatherings, bbqs, vacations, relaxing. Just working on this or that. Tomorrow my first flight starts at 9 am and my last flight Starts at 9 pm, meaning I'll be home around midnight, maybe a bit later since it's a cross country, before I get up early to go to the dentist and fly again.
Heeeere's Summer!
