Winter Life

I'm really trying to come up with something interesting, but basically we've all been hunkered down as the winter weather moves back in.  We've gotten about 5" of snow, the wind is blowing it all over, schools are closed today for the wind chills (more than 20 below zero), there has been zero flying, which frankly I'm okay with in temps and conditions like these, and we've just been doing stuff at the house.  I haven't been working nearly as hard as Steve, who always has SOMETHING he has to do on the computer, phone, email, etc.  In a way it's been sort of a vacation for me.  I'm reading a book and everything.  I do a few things here and there to make sure I'm not being a total slug, but all in all it's been pretty quiet and restful, honestly.

Kaylee's friend Meredith's birthday is today.  So Kaylee wanted to go to a store yesterday and get a Minion Balloon for her to take to school today.  The Party Store was closed for Martin Luther King Jr day.  The other party store went out of business.  So our last option was Kroger.  I'm not much in the mood to go out in this weather, but Kaylee can usually convince me to do about anything.  So we bundle up and head over.  We actually find a Minion balloon (seriously), and stand in front of the blow-it-up-place (floral department) for like 10-15 minutes.  Finally I go over to Customer Service and they page someone to floral.  Another 5 minutes goes by, nobody is coming.  So I rip it out of its package, go behind the counter, and fill it up myself.  Kaylee runs for the hills.  She said "I don't want to get kicked out of Kroger!"  I said "You won't be the one to get in trouble."  She hides around the end of the thing.  I get the balloon filled, rip off a ribbon to tie around it, the ribbon slips, and the balloon floats to the top of the ceiling.  Now *I* feel weird.  I look around, go back over, and there is only one more Minion balloon.  I grab it, open it, and am trying to figure out the hole on this one, and Kaylee is just gone.  A manager comes over and asks if nobody ever came to help, and I said no, we'd been here like 20 minutes so I thought I'd give it a try myself.  She blows it up for me and ties the ribbon on, and I tell her I actually need to pay for two balloons, and point to the one on the ceiling.  She laughs and says "It's on the house.  Just take it, you shouldn't have had to wait this long for a balloon."  She walks away, I wave over Kaylee, who still walks like she's sort of not really with me, and we hightail it back to the car, with one Minion balloon in hand.

Ever since, she's been scaring herself with the balloon every time she comes into the kitchen.  It's big and round and a big yellow face and she walks in and squeaks about every time.  They didn't have school today, but she's still getting together with Meredith for her birthday, and will be getting rid of the balloon then, and glad to do it.  She's just sorry she won't be able to have it at school for her where all her friends can laugh and pick on her for the balloon (she hates Minions so it's a gag thing.)

Sunday Kaylee went rock climbing with her church youth group.  She was the closest girl to getting to the top of this one wall.  The starting point is high enough she has to kind of jump up on it.  Well, about the fourth try in, she slams her knee right into the rock and goes down.  It started bruising right away, and today is quite colorful and large.  I had her put an ice pack on it, and the swelling isn't too bad, but it sure is the knee of many colors.

I don't remember if I wrote about when she went ice skating with some friends.  She layered up, had a good time, actually didn't even hurt herself this time, and then didn't realize she'd need some pants to change into afterwards.  Hers were, of course, soaked. Fortunately she has a friend who let her borrow a pair of sweats.  So she's gotten some fun in this winter, at least.

Now, I do believe a cup of mocha coffee and some warm socks is in order...
