Twas a good Friday. The weather was nice, I got lots of stuff done, and I got my 2nd Class Medical renewed too, with the ole German doctor down in Indy. This time I convinced him to let me just use my glasses... in the past I used to cheat or strain to be able to not have "Must wear corrective lenses" on my medical, but these last few years I've been trying to say "No, I need them now" and he kept saying "Just try! You can do it!" This year I just said "No, I can't see that last line without my glasses." I wear contacts every day now anyway, there's no reason to fight that battle any more!
I put a few things in my favor for the weigh in. I wore flip flops instead of my big heavy tennis shoes, and waited to eat lunch until after my appointment. They also weigh you in before they let you pee in the cup to test for diabetes and protein problems, so I took in a minimum amount of fluids required in order to be able to still give them what they want. That's right, I thought about it ahead of time, so what? :P It went well. He said I was fit as a fiddle, commented on my low pulse rate and low blood pressure (I've always had both those), and then he paused and said in his strong German accent "Wait. Wait a minute. You have lost weight. You have lost a LOT of weight! Last time you were in here you weighed...hey, you lost 45 pounds!" His daughter who works the front desk yelled from around the corner "I knew it!" It was funny. And nice, because the number came up at exactly 45 pounds less, which was what I was hoping for. I kept my old medical with an awful number on it, and stapled it to the old medical I faked with a more reasonable but still bad number that I was going to pull out to show anyone unofficial who asked for it (like the Red Star guys), and I'm keeping them both. Call it cautionary memorabilia kept long enough to remind me I don't care to ever see that again.
After I left the doctor's office, I remembered that last year when I left there I took the stairs instead of the elevator, on my newly found quest to make changes, and that even though I was just on the second floor, the stairs and the walk to my car wasn't super easy, which was depressing at the time. Today I hopped out of there full of vim and vigor, could have walked halfway home without too much effort. In the past, I'd have celebrated the extra work I put into making today turn out well with a Big Mac and a piece of cheesecake, but I instead celebrated with a good food day and breaking 10,000 steps for the day too. But don't worry, that cheesecake will be mine one of these upcoming days. ;) So all in all it was a really good day, and was bar none the best time I've ever had going to a doctor's office or medical exam. ;) He may be retiring this year, he says, so I'm glad I got to see him, just in case.
I got quite a few other productive things done today as well, but nothing that would interest anyone, things such as picking up camp supplies, running Kaylee to her voice lessons, stores, you know, exciting stuff. Then we ended the evening with a camp fire in the back yard on a cool, hazy evening that feels more like October than July. Neighbors are lighting off fireworks, and some of them are so loud they feel and sound like cannons going off nearby. The cats are so scared that we let them into the house, where they still twitch and jump every time a big one goes off, but they're much happier and more secure in here. Brett Michaels of "Poison" is doing a concert in town in a park, and we could hear him just fine from our back yard. Talk about a blast from the past...I stayed outside by the fire until I got chilly, hungry, and decided to come in and write this up.
Happy Friday, the 3rd of July!
