Yesterday we were at Applebees eating lunch, and we had a new waitress. She brought Steve and me our drinks, but wasn't sure which was my raspberry iced tea and which was his sweet tea, so as she set mine down in front of me, she said "If I got the wrong one, just switch with your dad." I said "Who?" She said "Your dad." and pointed down to Steve. My whole end of the table erupts in laughter as I said "Um, he's my husband", and unfortunately for her, another waiter who does know us was walking by and heard it, and in the back room all the employees there were giving her a really hard time over it. Poor thing was SO embarrassed. I'll bet she learns never to assume what someone's relationship is again. ;) She came back and apologized and said "It's just that you look so young, that's all." Uh-huh. ;)
This morning I was supposed to take a flight in the Saratoga over to Illinois, with a 350-hour private pilot getting a checkout in the plane and a couple of other guys. (All lawyers by the way.) :O When I went to bed last night, the weather wasn't looking too good, so I warned him of that ahead of time. Sure enough, bright and early this morning the forecast played out with low IFR all along the route of flight, home and the destination. IFR is one thing, but this was as low as it gets where you can still fly, and the icing that came with it just didn't work for what we were flying. Couldn't go above it, couldn't go below it, couldn't fly through it for over an hour and a half safely, didn't have anywhere close by to go where the weather WAS decent should I need it. No options, no outs. So I told him it was a no-go, and prepared to move on with the day. About an hour later he called me back and said they'd like to wait until after 11 and see if things cleared off enough for us to go then and if at all possible they'd like to still go. So, I waited and watched, and had to once again make a phone call that in my opinion it was not a safe flight to make. I hate that-I don't like not getting a flight done, particularly when other people are counting on it. But that's the way flying works. You have to live to fly another day. :) I did watch the weather for awhile the rest of the day to make sure it didn't suddenly clear off and make me look bad, but fortunately it stayed low and scuddy and icy all day long. For once, that's perfect. If it's going to be bad and make me cancel a flight, it had better STAY bad until the day is over, proving me right. ;)
I'm glad it's Friday, and I'm ready for the weekend!
