I am wondering why a section of street right next to my house was completely blocked off by police crime scene tape this afternoon. All the entrances and alleys were blocked off on a section of the road, with police cars with lights on at each end. Being the curious type, particularly since I live close enough to the area to see it from my driveway, I tried to see what was going on, with no luck. Trying to avoid being one of "those" lookie-loos, I didn't go down on foot, and now the tape and officers are gone as if nothing happened. I guess I'll watch the news and see what happened on my block today that I don't know about. There was a system failure today in aviation--computers that deal with flight plans crashed, which basically brought Atlanta's ability to move airplanes out to a halt, which caused delays around the entire country. Not a safety issue, but a definite hassle issue for anyone trying to get somewhere. That system has been flawed and outdated for a long time. I'm thinking Thanksgiving and the holidays would be an especially bad time for it to go down again...
Apparently the view from underneath our house showed that our entire toilet was resting on a vent pipe, and that my joke about crashing through the floor to the crawl space below was actually not a joke at all. Fortunately nobody stumbled to the restroom in the dark at 2 a.m. and sat down to find themselves in a dark, cold, damp, dead-spidery (but otherwise fine, Mrs. Lincoln) space with a broken tush/legs from the sudden stop at the end. "And how were you injured, Mrs. Stants?" "My toilet dropped me several feet straight down." ...pause... "And how were you injured, Mr. Stants?" "My wife...threw me...headfirst...five feet...I mean...I, uh, I walked into a door."
I don't really think a person would have fit through the hole, at least not where the cracks are, but it sure would have been a thrill. Guess what Steve gets to do this weekend? (He's beyond thrilled...)
Someone somewhere had an idea of posting a photo on their blog each day that represented something about that day. I'm not going to commit to that, but I do like the idea and will try to do more than I used to. The above photo is not one I took myself, but it did seem to represent most of the content of this post from the literal to the figurative. :)
On the way home from school today, Kaylee said "A lot went wrong today but I'm still in a really good mood. I can't help it, I'm just happy today." I suggested that this was a great lesson on how our happiness isn't dependent upon what happens to us, but rather on how we handle it. She paused and then said "You're right! I never thought of it that way before!" It's never too early to try to wrap the ole brain around that one, is it? :)

Edited to add: Apparently the police tape was due to a nice little battle about four houses down. A man fired shots, rammed his truck into a police car, and the policeman shot back at him. Well, isn't that lovely...
