Close but No Cigar

What a gorgeous day. Calm winds, blue skies, nice temps. I had one flight this morning with a student, practicing emergencies among other things. Practicing emergencies can actually be a little fun...much more fun than the real deal. ;) I'll "pull" the engine, which does not mean shutting it down for real (uh, any more anyway) and the person has to remember what to do and then attempt to make a safe landing where they said they were aiming to land. In other words, it's kind of like pool-you have to call the pocket for it to count even if it ends up in a good spot. None of this "I'll land there. Oops, not going to make it, I'll land there instead. Okay, maybe I'll land there." stuff. :) In Indiana you almost have to aim at a bad landing spot, because we have nothing but fields up here and if you keep your head on even halfway straight you will likely be just fine. I also like to practice somewhere near an airport and have them actually take it all the way to the landing, because nothing teaches you how to not waste time, add in your drag or get sloppy with your airspeed like thinking you have your "field" made only to wind up a half mile short in the woods unless you add in power that you wouldn't have had in a real emergency. Everybody overestimates their glide distance because we're all used to operating under power. That's why we have people practice these for flight reviews and their license and such...so if you have to land in the Hudson River some day, you'll actually make it instead of hitting the Jersey shore. ;)

While I was up flying, my phone went off over and over and over-I had something like two voicemails and 8 text messages all in a short period of time. I thought that was strange, but I was waiting to get down prior to taking care of them. So we taxiied up to the hangar, where I saw a police car parked by my car. Huh. That on top of the messages was enough to make a person briefly wonder 1) who died or 2) what does someone think I did? I real quick looked for any 911 texts and saw nothing...found out later that the officer is actually one of our new flight students who had come down and taken off in the other plane with Ty. Whew. ;)

Kaylee made it to within a few inches of the top of the rope at gymnastics today, but her arms went noodly and she started sliding down the rope. She got rope burn on the inside of her legs, but she stopped herself and made it down without falling. She was talking about how her arms were sore and her legs hurt, and I said "I know, gymnastics isn't for sissies, is it!" She laughed and said "NO!"
