Pre-Birthday Mania

Nathan and Chuck winged their way to California this morning, amidst some ice and some nasty headwinds to start off their trip. It took them about 12 hours start to finish to arrive, but they said they had a good trip, and they are now a lot warmer than the rest of us!

I spent today getting ready for Kaylee's birthday, which is tomorrow. :O We've been gone all weekend, and this was my first day to prep for her birthday, and tomorrow is the big day, so it was a little crazy for me today, but I *almost* got it done. I am missing two things: a treat for Awanas if they'll do it (I didn't get a chance to talk to them today), and a birthday cake which I hope I can accomplish tomorrow. The rest is done. She wanted a Hawaiian birthday as I mentioned earlier, and what do you know, the local party place had a Hawaiian theme! I have a hanging palm tree in our kitchen that is about 7' tall, I have a table set with coconuts and hula girl and boy, I have a curtain of flowers hanging over her bedroom door, plates and cups and confetti and hula girl outfits and all that fun stuff! It looks pretty good if I may say so myself. :)

After I picked Kaylee up from school, I took her to Meijer. She had asked if she could have a big party with all her friends over to our house, and I told her not this year. She was kind of sad about that, but really, we need more time to do that, and I'd like her to be a little older. Plus I don't even know who we'd invite or who would come. There are only 4 other girls in her class, and 5 other boys, and I don't know if any of them could or would come anyway, as I don't know them or their parents. *sigh* I don't like this stuff, and I don't want to have a party for my daughter that would end up with nobody coming. I can't even handle thinking about it, it makes my stomach knot. Anyway, I told her 'no' this year. I was at Meijer to pick up two things for Steve, and I had a good idea, I thought. I hadn't gotten Kaylee's presents yet, so I asked her if she would like to pick out her own presents for her birthday with a shopping spree with her Mommy, instead of having them be a 'surprise'. She LOVED it, and off she went. We hit the major kid aisles, and she was going crazy. She'd put three or four things in the cart, and I'd make her pick one or two, but we kept going, and it was fun, and I let her. Next thing I knew, the cart was full, and it was mostly full of HER stuff. I cried "uncle", and got the rest of the stuff we needed for home, and got to the checkout register with one thoroughly pumped-up little girl. She was lit up happy, and it was a fun afternoon, and I just enjoyed it all to pieces. Until I got to the cash register. What I *thought* it was going to cost...well, I was wrong. I hadn't kept good enough track. But at that point, I couldn't pull stuff out and say "can you take this back please?", so I just swiped the credit card with a big gulp, and then did something I *never* do. I emailed Steve and said something along the lines of "Er, I may have spent too much money today." In almost 12 years of marriage, that is the first time I've Ever said anything about money I've spent, so that tells you something. :O

So we devised a plan. An aunt and a grandparent have so far agreed to be a part of the "Cart of Presents" already purchased instead of sending her more presents, and the cash that would normally go to her is going to us to make them participants of her existing presents. lol I have held them all back until her birthday, and she'll enjoy opening them. I'm going to take a picture of this...her Hawaiian set-up and her pile of presents that I never intended to go that far!

After Kaylee went to bed, I went to work on her goody bags and the room decorations. I found these green polka-dot and orange polka-dot bags, and I packed a dozen of them full of fun stuff of a Hawaiian theme so she could take them to her school and a couple to her local friends. They have stuff like candy, leis, hair decorations, sunglasses, bouncy balls, that kind of stuff in them, all in bright Hawaiian colors. In each bag I put a colorful note that Kaylee would like to share Hawaiian treats with her friends for her birthday. So it's not a big party, but it should be fun for her anyway.

I also worked on dishes and snail mail and catching up on laundry that has piled up since we've been gone, but none of that is as much fun. ;)

I'll skip the Tuesday Top Ten since I've already written *way* too much today, and I think that's all for tonight, finally!
