Top Ten, Balance, Coincidences & Quotes

The Top Ten Reasons I Didn't Do a Top Ten Yesterday:
1. I was too busy lying on the couch strung out on cold medicine.
2. My creative switch was in the off position due to the fluid in my head repressing it.
3. I didn't feel like it because I had to sit at a specific angle on the couch in order to retain proper breathing status.

Yeah, that about covers it.

The Top Ten I was going to do was about Balance. See, several ladies on a parenting board on which I lurk had a discussion about balance. Cat did her Top Ten About Balance, and I was going to do mine. Unfortunately, I didn't then and currently don't have the capabilities to put any effort into that, so, I'm going to let it ride as a list and just 'talk'. But it's funny, because "balance", or my sometimes lack thereof, is something for which Steve often makes fun of (or shakes his head in dismay at) me. My personality is really such that when I do something, I often dive into it. I can pretty much accomplish anything I set my mind to-key words "set my mind to". In other words, the sounds of me focusing in and accomplishing one thing are often accompanied by the sounds of a couple of other balls dropping to the ground. A minor example: when I really decided I'd had enough of being overweight and decided to do something about it, I did. I dropped over 40 pounds, and I did it in maybe 5 months. I exercised daily, I watched every bite that went in my mouth, I increased my water and decreased my caffeine. I felt great. But I couldn't do it by just cutting out the fries and walking a little more and having it take longer, because once I wanted it done, I wanted it DONE. I also couldn't retain that level of focus forever, once I got about where I wanted to be. So now that most of that weight has creeped back on, the problem is not having the time to focus on that; the answer to that is "make small changes and do it slowly"...but how's that workin' for me so far, Dr. Phil? ;) It's nice to know that "balance" is an issue in other people's lives as well. Balancing work with family, balancing "me" time with responsibilities, balancing friends, spiritual lives, all of it. Like any other balancing act, it requires constant monitoring and adjustment. The closer you are monitoring and the smaller adjustments you make, the better you will be able to stay in balance. (There's an aviation metaphor there too, by the way. It's called a 'scan' and an ILS.) And to mix metaphors, whatever you do, try to avoid having so many balls in the air that it gets to that point where you just throw your hands up, close your eyes, let 'em go, and see what's left unbroken when you gather the courage to look again.

Lately I've noticed a lot of what I'll call coincidences. I'll have a conversation with somebody about something, and suddenly that conversation will be brought up by someone else too. (The balance thing is one, in fact.) The other day I was joking with somebody about eating pumpkins. Kaylee's homework two nights ago was a survey on eating pumpkins, if you liked eating them, how to eat them, etc. Of all things! There have been several of those lately, just weird, meaningless things from which I can't derive any "big picture". (Well, other than 'balance', naturally). This morning, another one happened. Yesterday and today I have had a song stuck in my head so much that I actually put it on my iPod so I could play it over and over. It's a song from 1989, so it hasn't been played in a long time on normal stations, and I don't listen to the 'oldies' stations. This morning, Kaylee and I were close on time to get her to school, but I forgot to take my iPod off the charger and put it in my car, to play on my way home from school as I usually do. I thought about stopping and getting it, but we needed to go, so I just turned the radio down, dropped her off, and as she was walking away I turned up the volume on the radio just in time to hear That Song's opening notes. I kind of stared at my radio in disbelief for a second because it completely threw me. I haven't heard that song in...well, years. I haven't even THOUGHT about that song for years until yesterday. Then I get it Quite Firmly stuck in my head for a day (and counting), forget my iPod, and have it show up on a radio station (where I've never heard it play before) right at the moment I'd have turned it on if I did have my iPod. Weird, huh? Coincidence, or Somebody telling me something I need to figure out? :)

Some different quotes for the day:

"It is not impossibilities which fill us with the deepest despair, but possibilities which we have failed to realize."
Robert Mallet

"We dance round in a ring and suppose,
but the Secret sits in the middle and knows."
--Robert Frost, "The Secret Sits"

"Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene."
--Arthur Christopher Benson

"Seemingly senseless pain and trauma engulfs much of life. If you seek to follow Him, you must be content to trust His character rather than your ability to understand. The difference between a knife in the hand of an assassin and a knife in the hand of a surgeon is intent: both inflict severe pain. You must decide whether God is an assassin or a surgeon. But remember, your choice does not change God, only your opinion."
-- Walter A. Henrichsen, Thoughts From the Diary Of A Desperate Man
