It was really nice sleeping in this morning, even if sleeping in now means 8:30 am instead of 11:30 am. It still felt good to do. :)
After I picked up Ann from church and dropped her off, I decided to go to Doc in a Box to get a Tetanus shot. I figured since the last Tetanus shot I got had to be in my early 20s, and since I cut myself on metal with less than clean hands/surface, and was unable to clean it out other than the lots of bleeding that hopefully flushed it out, that I'd better get the shot.
Did you know you can't just get a Tetanus shot anymore? Even that one is now merged with other diseases. So I am now protected against Pertussis, Diphtheria and Tetanus whether I wanted to be or not. I can't say I was worried about nor needed dosed on those other things.
The doctor was impressed with my wound care, said it was looking good (after "Wow, that's quite a cut you have there."). It's been too long since it happened, so he said they couldn't do stitches on it now, which is perfect with me. I didn't want stitches anyway. If I am careful with it, and make sure I don't break it open again, I won't need to glue it together either. I'll keep it protected another day or two for that, then start leaving it uncovered and let the good old fashioned air do its work.
There is no apparent tendon damage, as I can move the finger on all its digits, so that's good. I do have some nerve damage though. There are spots when you push on them that feel "dead". On the other hand, you hit another spot just right and it shoots an electric shock down the whole finger. The doc said I'd have to wait and see if it's permanent or not based on how it heals. Even if it is permanent, it doesn't affect anything I do.
I stopped at Panera for lunch. I wish they were cheaper, because I REALLY like their salads. Filling, good flavor, good ingredients. I could eat salads like that all the time, but to feed three people it's...too much money.
This afternoon Kaylee is working with her youth group for an Urban Outreach evening. They spent a couple of hours playing games with some of the kids, serving food, etc. Kaylee had a hard time explaining how it impacted her. She said so many of the people seemed so sad. That some of them were coming in wearing pajamas, were just so down. One little girl came in wearing a really pretty dress. Some of the girls there complimented her on the dress, and the little girl said "Thanks! It's my mom's dress, and it's too big for me, so she pinned it up for me" and when she turned around, it was all bunched up and pinned up behind her. Kaylee said she was happy that the mom had given the girl this pretty dress to wear, and so sad that it was bunched and pinned up and just not what would be socially acceptable or normal. She realizes that her dress would be altered to fit her before she went out in it, that poverty and life have a weight that you can see in people sometimes. It was a good experience for her, to serve people, not just with fun stuff, like camp, but real life. I worked at a soup kitchen for awhile. One of the tougher things I remember is how few people would be able to look you in the eye, and how I'd try really hard to make them feel..."normal", not less than, and it was hard because they're so down in life that they've lost their hope, and you can see it. I didn't enjoy that, to be honest, but it was a good experience, and this is a good experience for her, too. I think the youth group is going to be back there several times over the summer. I like to see her in a group that tries to make a difference in real ways. Building a house, helping feed people who need it, taking time to play with kids, working at a camp for disabled kids. Travel opens your eyes to how big and amazing and diverse the world is, and serving opens your eyes to...life. Helps provide some much-needed perspective.
Well, that's enough seriousness. I have no photos of that, either, but here's a photo of the flightaware track from yesterday. The timing isn't quite right, as you can be assured I didn't fly into anything red, but it gives you an idea of the area. On that note, my arm is getting sore from the shot, and my finger hurts, and I think I'll head off.
