A grandpa called last week and set up an appointment to take his little 2.5 year old granddaughter flying. The whole family was making a special trip and coming along. She's been fascinated by airplanes for as long as they can remember, makes them stop at the Indy airport to watch planes take off and land, loved the aviation museums they took her to...so they told her she'd go on a plane ride today and she was too excited to eat, jumped out of the car, shook my hand, was jumping up and down. It was the cutest thing. She spoke well for her age, and kept saying she wanted to fly. We get to the hangar, walk in, and she promptly freaks out. 'No, no, I am NOT going on an airplane, I don't care WHO comes with me, I don't care WHICH airplane we take, I am NOT going.' The parents, aunts, grandparents and sister all try to convince her to go, but I pulled aside grandpa and told him we'd just go look at all the planes and talk, but no way were we forcing her to get on a plane. So we spent an hour and a half just going up to different planes, and finally she started getting in them and being happy about it. She liked the twins the best. Mom says "you want to fly now, right?" She would say yes, but then back out if you got close to the plane, so I said no, we'd wait-I could tell she would have been horrified when we shut the door and started the engine-she just wasn't in the right frame of mind. So I gave them some fun local events we have coming up for her to watch more planes, and I told her we'd go fly some other time. She was patting the plane goodbye, shook my hand and said "thank you"...precocious for her age, and cute, and likes airplanes too much for me to want anyone to shove her in one against her will. Thought I was going to have a neat story today; instead it was a story yet to be determined. Hopefully it ends with a great first flying experience for her down the road a bit. She may have had too much pressure and focus put on her. Plus, she's 2 1/2. Maybe next time. :)
The rest of the day was Kaylee. When I got home, and had lunch, she and I went to Kohl's, where she needed to pick up a long dress to wear for her performances at Graduation tomorrow. Fortunately we found one in her size that she liked, fairly quickly. She said "You know, we could do more clothes shopping while we're here." No. But I was glad we found something without having to go to a bunch of different stores.
It was raining most of the day, so we got damp a few times running around, but that was okay too. She had a bunch of Senior Open Houses to go to today too. She has friends who are seniors, too, from Starlets, Encore, and band, so I drove her to her first Open House, dropped her off, and went to the local health care clinic's back parking lot where nobody could see me and where I had free wifi. I read a book in my car with the rain pouring down, ate a bag of doritos and figured she'd text me to come back within the hour, as she'd planned. She found some friends there and hung out for an hour and a half, and then texted me that a couple of her friends could drive her to the next party. I reminded her that I had her card and her clothes for her party later, so she had me come get her after all, which is good because otherwise I could have gone home and I would be annoyed. ;) I dropped her off at the next Open House, and went to the restaurant in town to eat, figuring she'd be awhile again. I got into my grilled cheese and chili, when she texted me that she was ready to go to the next one. Heh. She ended up going with friends to one more, and then I picked her up there. We were a bit early for her 7:30 party, where they are having a big bonfire and burning a bunch of their school papers in a symbolic and enjoyable end to the school year. So she drove the car in the parking lot at her school for awhile and practiced that. I'll be going back out to get her at 10:30 pm or so. Busy Kaylee day. :)
Serious focus.
