Steve flew and worked all day, first flight 8 am, last flight ending at 8 pm. I drove down to Indy Metro to fly the PT with another guy, leaving the house at 8 am and back in Kokomo by noon. I'm a little uneasy flying out of Metro in the PT. From the back seat there, I don't have forward visibility, and should we lose the engine, there is almost nowhere to go for awhile there. When you take off there are a lot of buildings, cars, poles, trees...and almost no straight, flat, free surfaces. If I was up front, I'd have a chance, depending on where it quit, to hit a tight parking lot, or one field behind me to the side if I was high enough, maybe a road, but it's extremely busy and full of poles on either side. But from the back seat there...my odds aren't good unless the front seater, who is a student and still working on making a safe landing on an actual wide open runway, manages to pull off something pretty good. Every time we take off, I'm searching all around me for where to go, and I keep coming back to one parking lot...which I can't see until I'm already past it, making it a little difficult to maneuver to in a split second. A lovely thought, I know, but I'd rather think about and come up with some kind of plan if possible. Right now I'm just glad when we get to about 400' and I know I can hit that field behind/beside me.
After lunch Steve and I went to Kokomo, went to swap vehicles in Greentown, then he was back to flying while I picked up the kid. After a little Starbucks to soothe the soul, I took her home and went out to Kokomo to fly the Cub. The aerobatic guys were out again--I thought they'd have gotten their fill over all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but apparently not. ;) I wanted to stay at Kokomo and do some stuff on concrete, but with the aerobatic box hot and me not having a radio, I just went to Glenndale instead, and basically worked myself out. Wheel landings, three point landings, power out on downwind emergency landings, one wheel landing into the crosswind, one wheel landing the wrong way of the crosswind, aggressive slips to wheel or 3-point landings, just a little bit of everything. I really need to do it at Kokomo, so hopefully I'll find an afternoon coming up when the aerobatic box won't be active and I can do some pattern work for an hour or two.
When I came home, I did some laundry, and the second load was too much for our current sewer system issue, which backed up water into our tub and under our toilet, which is a very bad deal since it went into the floor. I have a load of dishes that need run too, but sure can't do that right now. Hopefully tomorrow after we've been gone most of the day. Dumb thing.
PT on takeoff with Downtown Indy off in the distance.
Yellow wings, yellow flowers, looks just like Spring to me!
Sticking my leg out the open door of the Cub, getting a little fresh air and a stretch.
Another yellow airplane with lots of gas and an empty front seat.
Glenndale under the wing.
Swinging around for landing on 18.
