Friday afternoon the Bonanza clinic guys started arriving. I had to pick Kaylee up from school, run her around a bit, then out to voice lesson, and Mom and Ernie arrived too. :)
Saturday morning we went out to the airport, and it was cold and windy and grey. Steve and I had wanted to do a couple things, but the weather just wasn't cooperating. Kaylee needed to be at the concert by 5:30, so I came home then dropped her off, ran home and we all went out to the concert at 7 pm together. I had miscalculated and not gotten enough tickets, but another mom there got one for me to save the day, and Steve ended up sitting by himself over there while the other 4 of us sat together. I'd have sat alone but the angle wasn't good enough for photos, and you know we can't have that. ;)
What can I say. The concert was excellent. They had an 80s theme. 80s and Bon Jovi. Footloose. Can you HAVE a more perfect concert for me? :) I ended up with about 150 photos to go through. Seriously, as always, the choir director and the kids did a fantastic job.
Sunday. I was back out at the airport by 9 a.m., where I took a student, his wife, their dog, and the 172RG and flew to Racine, Wisconsin. It was windy and bumpy and neither the wife nor the dog enjoyed themselves at all, unfortunately. We went up VFR, so we spent a lot of time making sure we weren't in airspace we weren't supposed to be in, and it required some constant monitoring for awhile there. We stayed low and right over the shoreline at the VFR corridor. The winds were strong enough at altitude that a 1.5 hour flight took almost 2 hours. We landed, dropped off the wife and dog, both of whom say they'd rather drive through Chicago and to Racine from now on rather than do the bumpy plane ride any more, turned around and headed right home. I needed to be on the ground by 2 pm in order to make it to Kaylee's recital at 2:30. We landed at 1:47 pm, called the fuel truck, put the plane away, I said hello and goodbye at the hangar where I could, and then drove to the recital.
The recital was for piano and voice students alike. Kaylee had not wanted to go, didn't want me to go, and she didn't want me recording her, either. I respected her wishes on the recording, but I told her I shouldn't have. She sounded good, she looked good. She had been worried she would forget the words or not sound right. There were three other kids who forgot the words and the teacher had to sing along with them off the side in order to help them remember. That made me kind of nervous for when Kaylee went up there, but she fortunately was okay. :) I think I said this last time, but I'm saying it again. The piano kids. You do not have to be a grand pianist, but you can play a one finger song with the right notes and rhythm, Almost none of the kids who went up there during a 2 hour recital were able to play their songs halfway decently. Many of the songs you couldn't even tell what they were--and they were all Disney songs. It's one thing to miss a note or two, but it was painful. I don't remember piano recitals from when I was a kid where it seemed like they didn't practice. I couldn't imagine going to a recital and not knowing I had the song down. Nervous, yes, scared of goofing it up, yes, but you can tell when a song is familiar to someone and when it's still pretty new to them. There was a lot of "never really practiced" going on, and people saying "Great job!" afterwards, and it wasn't a great job. It makes me feel bad for the kids and a little annoyed at society in general.
Anyway. I have a LOT of photos to go through. Here are some from Chicago and the recital because those batches were small. You'll have to wait for the concert photos...
I see myself. Sorta.
Chicago
I like the detail in this one.
I was too far away. But here's Kaylee at the recital today.
