Stuff

My trip didn't end up happening on Friday.  It could have, though.  He decided pre-emptively to send everybody home on an airline that morning rather than wait in case I couldn't get through.  But when the time came, I could have done it.  I hate those.  Well, I more hate those where *I* call it off and then could have made it, but I didn't like this version either.  :P

Friday we had a fantastic lunch at Glenndale.  Ham, sweet rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, deviled eggs, and a whole table full of desserts.  It was tooooo tasty.  I haven't yet recovered, and I'd just gotten back to where I wanted, too!  Not after yesterday and today.  lol  Oh well, both days were well worth it.

Friday evening Kaylee had her voice lesson, but she didn't do much singing.  Her voice hasn't sounded right since the Wizard of Oz.  The director there kept telling them to sing louder, louder, louder...well, Kaylee did, and has ended up straining her vocal cords.  The main problem with that is her tryouts for the singing group "Starlets" is coming up right after break here.  She's been practicing one song since the beginning of the year for her audition song to the group, and if her voice isn't back, she doesn't really have any chance.  Worst of all, there are only 3-4 slots open for altos in the group, and there are a ton of people trying out for those slots.  The choir director told everyone that Freshmen almost never get into the group.  Kaylee told me that it doesn't matter, she wants to be one who gets in as a Freshman.  This is what she wants to do more than anything in school, more than the drama club even.  This singing group does drama, song, dance, choreography, and competition, and she absolutely loves it.  She's wanted to be in that group since before she even was willing to sing in public--the group is the main reason she started taking singing lessons in the first place.  If she doesn't get in, and she definitely has some odds stacked against her, it's going to be a pretty bad deal to her.  No pressure.  But in the meantime, she's not allowed to sing or strain her vocal chords any more, and she's supposed to avoid coffee (no problem there) and drink lots of water and rest up her vocal chords.  She has about 10 days to heal up and practice a bit more before the big day.

After the Friday voice lesson, Kaylee and I made an angel food cake with strawberries and cool whip for a belated birthday cake for Ann.  We hadn't ever made angel food before, but I think it turned out pretty well in general.  It surprised us when the batter was so full of air and liquidy, and how it seemed to grow upon itself both when we were mixing it and when it was baking.  It almost grew out of the pan, but managed to hold just perfect.  Next the direction said to cool the cake upside down on a glass bottle.  Okay.  As I was tipping it upside down, I said "This seems like a bad idea".  Kaylee agreed.  But I did it and it worked.  AE later said it was to keep the angel food cake from falling flat as it cooled.  Huh.  At one point as we were mixing it up, Kaylee said I needed a cup and a half of water.  I said "A cup and a half, roger that." She said my favorite phrase:  "Mom.  Stop."  She informed me that normal people don't use pilot talk when they're baking.  I personally think she should be happy that we were actually baking and leave my language out of it!  ;)

Steve and Nathan worked on the PT and other things today, and I went out for the afternoon, had two lessons.  The winds picked up right before my first guy showed up.  He didn't need those winds, but I decided not to cancel him.  It was funny though, the winds at Kokomo were 270 and we have a runway 23.  So I thought, hey, I'll go to Frankfort or Logansport--they both have a Runway 27, right into the wind!  Except the winds at both Frankfort and Logansport were 230-240.  The same dumb crosswind was at every airport no matter what runway numbers they had!  The winds were gusting up to 22 knots or so, not the worst in the world, but much more than this fellow needed.  But he was up for the challenge, and we flew for an hour and a half.  We got tossed around pretty well, more than the surface winds, it was very turbulent up there.  Next up someone was working on instrument approaches into the full missed approach and hold, hold entries, procedures, etc.  We did that for just over an hour and it started calming down by the end of that flight.

The three of us went out to dinner at Applebees, had two appetizers and dessert along with dinner, so theoretically I should drink nothing but water and maybe a Slim Fast tomorrow, but again, it was quite tasty and I enjoyed it.  I did get some walking in today, but nothing that would offset the last two days...still better than nothing.  ;)  Anyway, when we got home, Kaylee decided to attack me.  She's been getting more and more aggressive on trying to "beat"  me.  The problem is that this time she decided to start throwing real punches.  She popped me in the back of my left hand, which hurt and left a bruise, and then she started throwing a whole bunch of punches, so I threw my right arm up and blocked them, but with one of them she nailed a spot by my elbow that made my whole arm tingle and then go numb.  I couldn't move that arm for awhile but I never told her that, I just attacked her with my left arm and feet and was able to keep her off of me until I could move my right arm again.  I never have told her that she got me with that one, and even now, several hours later, that arm hurts.  I can't bend it properly.  I'm still not telling her that.  She kept insisting she won because she saw she bruised my hand.  I told her you don't win just because you connect on someone.  You win if they can't get back up or can't keep going any more.  She still insists she won.  I don't know about that, but she is getting more difficult to handle, and Steve tells me I can't start throwing real punches back at her, and that just doesn't seem fair at all.  ;)
