April Showers

April is already a week into it, and that amazes me.  Time just keeps screaming past.

Weather was cruddy today, but I didn't really mind it all that much.  As usual I got other stuff done instead, from exercise to food and house supply shopping to a few house chores.  It's supposed to rain and be cloudy pretty much all week.  At least sleeping in is an option.

Kaylee slept in until lunch time, and hasn't done much of anything today.  She has the option to do a few things locally but doesn't really feel it.  What she'd like to do is take a few days and head south and go somewhere warmer, or do a sleepover somewhere with a pool or the beach, or anything like that.  Most of her friends are gone with family to various beaches.  We're just not going to be able to do anything all that cool this time, which we keep reminding ourselves is not going to hurt her.   Steve has spent a lot of time trying to find something fun for her, but it's just not working out, which doesn't make him feel very good about it either, but you can only do what you can do.  We had an idea of taking her friend to Indy, go shopping, eat out, maybe catch a movie, then get a hotel room in Indy at a place with a pool and let them have a fun evening there.  Except her friend can't spend the night as she's heading out of town for an extended weekend out of state.  So we're going to do the shopping/food/movie thing with the friend and then come on back home, and that'll be about all she does for Spring Break this year.  First world problems, but still a bit of a bummer.

Not much else going on, just watching the feedback happening from an airplane accident that just happened.  A hired pilot in a C-414A (which has less horsepower than "my" 340 by the way) had seven folks on board and took off out of Indy after the Final Four game...went to Bloomington, IL and went down just a few miles from home.  It was at minimums there, but it was at minimums, and should have been doable.  With seven people on board an airplane that is heavier than mine but has less power, it could not have been light even without a lot of fuel, and taking off with wx at minimums light on fuel wouldn't be great either.  Don't know what happened to him yet, but he wasn't really on the approach when he went down, was the wrong direction for a missed approach, and FlightAware never showed him below 1500', which is either it being wrong or something going wonky on him when he was on the approach.  Dunno.  People are getting on it that he was single pilot IFR and getting on it that he was flying into a place where the weather was at minimums, but...that's the job, that's the norm for people who aren't just weekend warriors at it.  When Steve and I go on a family trip, we don't go when it's at minimums, because we don't have to, there's no reason to.  When I have an MBros flight, if it's at minimums, that just means I can still get in, and so I do, and I get paid to get it done.  So did he, and he didn't do anything wrong by taking the flight, or trying the approach.  You fly the approach, you take a look, if it's not there, you go somewhere else, just like Steve and Nathan did coming back from Wyoming, and that's how it's supposed to work.  Something went wrong...I'll be keeping an eye on finding out what, out of professional and personal curiosity.

Tomorrow looks like another good day to sleep in though, and I'll take it.  :)
