Holiday Randomness

Since it's a Holiday weekend, today feels like it should be Sunday or Monday, when it's really only Saturday.  That's a good thing!

We've been working on some projects around here.  Steve's got his, I've got mine, and Kaylee's packing her suitcase for her next round of camp, which starts tomorrow.  This will be the Teens In Leadership Training camp, where she'll have a lot of work and a fair amount of responsibility, and she'll be the youngest one there.  I believe she'll do a great job, I think she's had enough time to rest up this week so she won't be too cranky, and I think she'll rise to the occasion. :)

There's a group in California called "The Old Bold Pilots".  This made me smile, because the saying is "Don't be a show off.  Never be too proud to turn back.  There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots."  by E. Lee.  So a handful of old pilots, with this quote in mind, got together to commemorate having beaten the odds themselves.  I've often thought the quote should probably be "There aren't many old, bold pilots", because I sure know there ARE some.  lol

I saw a video today of a 4th of July DUI Checkpoint stop.  Basically a young man stopped at the checkpoint, and from that point on the police demanded he do things or allow things that were not their right to demand.  They illegally detained him, illegally searched his vehicle, and said that his "Constitutional rights don't matter when it comes to public safety."  As one officer was illegally searching his car, the officer said to another officer standing there "This guy is innocent and he knows his rights."  He got it all on tape.  Not once did they ask if he'd been drinking, which was the purported reason for the "checkpoint".  The guy stayed polite, kept his hands on the wheel until they told him to get out, but he did do things like ask if he was being detained (they wouldn't answer, because obviously they either have to detain him or let him go), he asked if he was required to answer this or that question (he was not), he refused consent to search his vehicle, he declined providing his ID, which he doesn't have to do unless they suspect him of a crime, etc., but he never raised his voice or got threatening.  The police, on the other hand, did.  They also scratched up his vehicle with the K-9 search.  He ended his video footage by posting "Happy Independence Day, America."  He's right.  Everybody just answers the questions and does what the police say because it's easier and they're not doing anything wrong, so why not.  THIS is why not.  Because then when you want or need to exercise your rights, you no longer seem to have them available to you.  So now we have checkpoints where they stop you, demand answers, search you and your property, and check your paperwork, with no cause.  What other time/country does this remind you of??  I'm going to turn into one of those cranky nut jobs yet, if I'm not already well on my way.

Kaylee and I ran out this afternoon to pick up some socks that she needed for camp, and she also wanted to get those bangs done.  So for the second time in a week I drove her to the hair cut place, and for the second time in a week she backed out once she got in the hairdresser's seat, concerned that it would look crappy and take forever to grow back out.  She was afraid I was going to be mad, but I'm not, at all.  I told her I'd rather she speak up and not do something, than just sit there and go through with something she wasn't sure she wanted out of just fear of me being mad.  This isn't my personality--being that afraid of getting your hair cut is pretty odd to someone who cuts their own hair with their own scissors and figures it'll work out okay or grow out eventually.  But...this one gets under her skin, and we all have our things that get under our skin, and so be it.  She'll have to either work up to it or decide if she does or doesn't want to do it next week.  :)

We ended up watching the fireworks they had in Kokomo tonight, and we could see them pretty well from our own back yard, so we didn't even have to go anywhere.  Fireworks are awesome--what's not to like?  Beautiful colors and patterns, and fire, all together.  Perfect.  ;)

I found a website of aviation quotes--I'll probably have to post a page of those some day, but today is not that day.  For tonight I need a Diet Coke and to look at tomorrow's weather and see if we're going to be flying or driving to Ohio!
