Wait, Wait, Go!

Well, there are worse ways to spend a day, but it was a little slow. I took off this morning bright and early to fly the 340 over to Illinois for maintenance. It was so beautiful out, I just took off VFR, turned off the radio and plugged in my iPod. The rest of the day was spent waiting to find out if I'd get to fly it home or have to be picked up. (The answer was--get picked up, after 4 pm). I drove into town to have lunch, and worked on my formation paperwork that I'd brought along. I'm not enjoying that. The 16 pages of multiple choice questions look like they were written by the same people who wrote the FAA's questions. You know, how most of the answers could be correct, but one is the MOST correct, but you don't know which one that is? It also asks me for power settings of a Yak, which I don't have any way to know. Several ask me how you would communicate something, giving 4 different ways that would all get the point across fine. I've heard all 4 used. Ugh. I wonder how all the current FAST-rated folks would fare on taking this test. Of course, I know how most current pilots would fare on taking those writtens again too. I'm not sure which of my points that makes: that a lot of people don't know as much as they should, or that the tests are dumb and not an indicator of how well you can do something. We'll go with "b" for that answer, I guess, in the spirit of this complaint. ;) On the other hand, there are several questions that have some pretty funny answer choices to them, too, so obviously the FAA didn't do them, as the FAA is trying to regulate anything with a sense of humor out of existance. ;)

So, I had to be picked up in Illinois and brought home, and Justin got that tragic duty. ;) I had left the headset for the 340 in the 340, so on the way home I just put in my iPod and went along for the ride, occasionally playing charades to converse. Not a bad way to go along for a ride of an afternoon.

When I got back, it was 7:30 or so, and I picked up Kaylee from the house and drove her right out to the mall. She had a couple things she needed for her Spring Break trip, and usually we have a hard time shopping and finding stuff. Today was completely easy. It still took two hours, but she found a new swim suit, shirt and jean shorts, all three of which are usually a lot harder to get where she likes them and they fit her and they're comfortable and she'll actually wear them. ;) One store we were in, the cashier asked me if I had any coupons, and when I said no, she found one there and scanned it in, saving us over $20! I thought that was very nice. And handy.

Once we got back home, Kaylee still had to finish her homework, and then the chore of packing began. Oh my. We did get her down to one bag, but she still has way more clothes than she needs. But hey, if it's all in one bag, then...good enough! Tomorrow we take her to school, after school we bring her bag, and away she goes, headed for Daytona Beach, where I am sure she will have a wonderful time. :)

On another, completely unrelated note, this made me laugh. I'm fairly sure I've ridden through and saved a few take offs and landings that looked like this:
