I'm sitting here watching the airshow at our trailers, under the shade of the pop up tents, with Steve T hauling food and drinks around, getting ready to fix bbq chicken breasts and "fixin's" for dinner. It's the first air show of the Oshkosh week, kicking off the first official day of the show.
We got up early this morning-I was awake by 6, which is just wrong, but that's how it works sometimes. :) Our trailer this year is so big you can fit two people in the bathroom...at the same time. The shower is not a lilly-put shower, it's a normal person shower. With a skylight. I took a shower in there this morning for the first time because I did not feel like going to the public showers. They're spoiling me here; now it'll be not as much fun to go back to the smaller bathrooms where if you sit on the stool you're hard pressed to shut the door too. :) It's really nice-I should take pictures of it for posterity.
I'm sitting across from a pickup truck with the license plate "STK N RDR". I stared at that for a second, knew it was supposed to be something, but after "Steak", I couldn't come up with it. I looked away and then thought "You're at Oshkosh, dummy." It's "Stick and Rudder", of course!
Most of our crew is here-we're just missing Jon & Cusick now, and they should be here within the next half hour or so. We walked around this morning and hit most of the stuff. Walked out to warbirds and checked out the revised setup there, went to Aeroshell Square (renamed this year but that's still what it is to me) where I said hello to a couple of Purple People (an internet forum I participate on), and went over to the Red Tail trailer where I got to say hello to Doug R and watch the 8 minute movie clip they put on about the Tuskegee Airmen. Really nice job, great movie clip, and at the end they put you in the back seat of the P51 behind Doug while he does a loop and a roll, and on that huge of a screen it's literally bigger than life, bigger than what it feels like in real life, and that was fun. Plus it was air conditioned and we enjoyed the break. ;) We stopped and checked out a few tents, bought a couple t-shirts for the year, and wandered around the Fly Market where Kaylee got a pair of sunglasses for $2. There was a t-shirt that says "I don't drive fast, I just fly low." It seems appropriate, but it had a cheesy picture on it, and Steve said "You ARE an adult, you know." ;) The cheesy picture nailed the coffin on it for me, otherwise I'd have thought about it. Kaylee liked one that said "Silly boys, airplanes are for GIRLS", but she didn't end up taking it. The other one she liked said "I may have wings but I'm no angel". Also true, but not quite right for her.
Nathan came and picked us up in the golf cart at the Fly Market gate so we could come home, set up the lawn chairs, break out the drinks, relax and watch the show, while the grill is getting prepped. Tonight is a free REO Speedwagon concert. We may or may not go. It starts in 30 minutes and we haven't decided yet. 'Cause this is how we roll. ;)
