Sitting at home this afternoon, Kaylee says "Mommy! Somebody's knocking on our front door!" This never happens, people who know us know where to come, and people who don't know us don't usually come knocking on our door. I go up front in time to catch Kaylee peeking out the window and saying "It's a delivery guy, mom." So I open the door, only to find that it is in fact a solicitor for Sickle Cell Anemia. Here I will admit that Steve is the sucker, okay, kind one, for people coming to the door wanting money, particularly if they are kids, and I am the one that can easily say "No thank you" with a smile. I was getting ready to say "no, thank you", but this was an older African-American man, walking in the rain, no umbrella, holding a can, giving a quick, quiet spiel on how Sickle Cell Anemia kills people in the black community every day, asking for just change, no big donations, and looking cold, tired, wet, and slightly sad in the eyes. Either he's a hustler or he's lost someone close to him to Sickle Cell and is just trying to do his small part in gathering donations, and I decided it's not my place to guess which one. I told him to come up under the overhang on the porch so he wouldn't get wet for a minute and came back with a handful of change, got a nice smile from him and a thank you, and he trudged off knocking on doors. I turned to Kaylee and said "That wasn't a delivery man. That was someone looking for money towards a disease that affects a lot of African-Americans." She smiled at me and said "Then aren't you glad you opened the door, so you could help?" That was not my point, but she wins that one. :)
I hate to say this, in case I jinx it, but I think we got rid of the ants. Steve went all warrior on them, got some home ant spray out, and sprayed every single place he could conceive of that they might be finding to enter our home. He moved things, he went outside, he went under things, and we have not seen one single ant in almost two days. I'm half tempted to leave a dirty dish on the counter again and see if they are really gone for good or not, but I'm not sure I have the fortitude to have to see them all over the place again for one thing, and Steve would make ME do all the spraying next time if I pulled that, for the other. ;) So for now we are enjoying Day Two of our Ant-Free home. Long may it reign.
Kaylee says to me in the car on the way home today, "Hey Mom, can I have an iPad?" Apparently a friend of hers at school is getting her parents' old "iPad" (I'm betting iTouch) while they get a new, bigger iPad. I asked Kaylee if she had any idea what it was. No. Any idea what she could do with it? Nope. Any thought of how much it cost? Of course not. Any burning need to have one? Er, no. I suggested she not hold her breath on this one. Besides, if anyone gets one first, it's probably going to be her dad. ;)
The end of the school year is screaming closer, and we're getting a busy schedule to prove it. Spring Programs, recitals, family reunions, summer trips, airshow stuff here and there, swim lessons getting set up, all sorts of good busy summer fun. As Kaylee would say, "YAY!"
