Actually, it's not bad here compared to a lot of places. We "officially" got 5.5" of snow, with about another inch to come tomorrow. When I checked the school closings page, Kaylee's school was not on there, so I loaded her up and took her in during the early phases of the winter storm warning. The roads were covered in snow, making people finding their own lanes an apparent challenge, but it was kind of pretty. As I was driving away at school, a teacher leaned her head out and said "We're dismissing at 12:30 today for weather!" Well...okay, but I'll bet that would have been good to know ahead of time for some folks who can't just take half a day off without earlier notice. I'm not one of them, I was fine since the weather was too bad to have any scheduled flights, but I did wonder how many people were a little unhappy with the short notice.
As I was driving around today in the Jeep, I was really happy to not be driving the Chrysler 300. The last two winters I called that a "sled", and today just showed me how much that was true. Every winter with it I found myself actually concerned driving around in that new car that I couldn't hardly keep straight with even a little snow, let alone truly bad road conditions. I couldn't get going at a stop sign or stop light because the wheels would just spin, even if I tried accelerating very slowly. I had to creep until the wheels got some traction and hope they did. I sure had to have a long clear space prior to trying to turn in front of moving traffic. Turning a corner I couldn't use any acceleration or my back end would swing out from under me. Switching lanes or anyone pulling in front of me or stopping suddenly left me literally sledding. I had to drive like a 98 year old woman without her glasses on. Apparently all the winters I've driven in prior to the Chrysler were in front-wheel-drive cars, because that lack of control was new to me. So today I'm driving along in the Jeep, I've got traction, I can stop, I can go, I can turn, I can switch lanes, I can even go the speed limit. I was pleased. ;) (Steve is in the Oldsmobile right now, and it does really well too.)
So while we're only supposed to get another inch of snow, the bigger issue is that the temps are dropping and the winds are climbing. Lots of snow + high winds = drifted over roads. Kaylee's school does not show that it's got a delay or cancellation yet, which just means I have to get up early and see then instead of maybe getting to sleep in. Phoo. :)
I'm just going to leave this one with a link to a little video about an idea being bandied about a couple of years ago to give every airline passenger an ID bracelet. On it would be their boarding pass, their personal info, and oh yes, the ability to tase them should they be a terrorist or misbehave on the flight. Can I just say... :O
