The Arrival

I woke up this morning around 4:30 a.m.-I laid there and tried to pretend like I was sleeping to see if I could fool myself into getting more rest, but unfortunately I didn't fall for it. Sometime around 6 I got up and checked the weather to find fog, mist, and low IFR reported all the way from Kokomo to the Chicago area. The irritating thing about it was that it was blue sky above-it was just a low level ground "fog" that was holding us back. Finally our airport hit legal VFR visibilities, and Trey came on in from Huntington in the G-model T-6. A short time later, we were off and on our way.

The flight itself was uneventful. Much longer than originally anticipated thanks to heavier than forecast headwinds, but clear and smooth. We flew up in formation, sometimes tighter, sometimes looser, and I'd given my camera to Kaylee for her to take pictures from the back seat. She took pictures of all the instruments, about 20 pictures of herself doing various goofy poses, a few pictures of Trey off of our wing, and about two shots out the window after we'd landed at Oshkosh. :)

Coming into Oshkosh was pretty straightforward-the Warbird Arrival is very basic. I was cleared to land #2 on the purple dot of 36L. I ended up having to do a 270 on final after a few planes on a different arrival were turned in front of me, and I ended up #7 or so instead of #2, but I landed on my dot, taxied to warbird parking, and we had officially arrived. I looked up as I was shutting down to see a red hat over there. Even though I hadn't warned them I was coming, Chuck, Judy and Jim Z. happened to all be there right when I got there. Perfect! We cleaned out the T-6 and headed back to camp.

Our trailer arrived about two hours late, but it arrived and it's nice. The weather is beautiful, and we're camped by the hill that the kids love to play on. A few hours after Trey and I landed, the winds picked up gusting upwards of 27 knots at 200. Oshkosh was landing people on 27. We thought about taking a lawn chair out there to watch those landings, but didn't end up doing it. :)

We had steaks on the grill for dinner and a nice fire is going as I type.

We've arrived. :)
