Indianapolis Air Show - Friday

The whole week was a struggle of things going wrong, getting behind, things breaking, just things Not going according to plan. Murphy was in full swing this week, and Friday was no exception. Steve ended up with the brunt of it Friday because he was the one driving the truck and trailer down to Indianapolis, and instead of leaving in the morning as planned, he didn't end up leaving until the afternoon, making him the last one to arrive.

Nathan (and Jamie) and myself (and Kaylee) went out to Kokomo Airport in the morning and got ourselves ready to go-we needed to try to get into the airport down at Mt. Comfort before the airspace was closed and we'd have to get special permission, perhaps run into conflicts, etc. Kaylee wanted to ride with me in the back of the T-6 instead of drive down-she said she heard it would take him two hours and me 30 minutes, and she made up her mind then. ;) I got fuel, got her secured in, and away I went just as the Mustang was firing up. I was about 10 miles to the north of the Mt. Comfort (MQJ) airport when the Mustang caught and passed me, coming in for a landing. I was just behind him, and we had arrived. It was just starting to build up-there were a lot of tents up, and some people standing by the flight line with cameras. I told Kaylee to look around-I said "Take a look to your right-we're here!" She looked over at the people and said "Mommy, everybody's staring at me!" Later I said "you should have waved at them", and she said "Oh, I did wave to some of them." So she must not have been too bothered by it. ;)

Most of us were down there now, with the exception of Steve. We needed a place for him to park the trailer in the camp ground. So we picked out a spot, went and paid our camping fee, came back, and visitors for the day had parked their cars right in the way of the camping spot. They aren't supposed to park cars there, but they'd left and there was no way to move them. By now our camping spot options were slimming down to back against a fence where it was muddy and we may get stuck, parking in the spot where the cars were, blocking them in until people behind them left (which was tempting), or a similar spot that blocked people. No good options. This wasn't good, because Steve pulling in after all that day he'd had and not having a place to set up camp once he got there wasn't going to be enjoyable. And then the camper in the close proximity to our crew just...left. I don't know why you'd bring a camper to an air show camp ground and then leave before the show actually started, but he did, and Nathan joked that God gave us that spot and we weren't moving out of it until Steve showed up to stick our camper on it, which he did about an hour or so later.

Meanwhile, all my sunscreen and hats were in the trailer, so Kaylee and I got a good dose of Vitamin D most of the day as we did our thing by the planes, watching the air show, etc. I burned my scalp and I officially have the beginnings of that lovely annual farmer tan on my arms.

Our group with Chuck and Judy and the grandkids, Nathan and Jamie, our family, and Charlie and Dawn went into town to a local restaurant and had an excellent dinner (seafood bisque soup and bleu cheese fillet mignon...yum) before coming back to the campground and settling in for the evening.

The kids wandered around and picked up trash from the campground, filling up two bags by the way, and we adults sat around the fire and watched the hot air balloons light up as the sun set. It was a clear evening, nice and cool, and finally the hassles of the day were done and we could kick back and just relax a little bit...
