I thought today was supposed to be beautiful, so when I was up with a student and we started getting rained on about an hour later, a lot, it was a little bit of a surprise. Should I admit to that? Why not; it was VFR and we were doing takeoffs and landings so it's not as though you couldn't just land and be done. It actually made for a decent learning situation on weather and flying and VFR and all that good stuff for him. Oh, and landing with a rainy windshield and how to stay under the shelter of the wing until you're ready to run for it-the advantage goes to Cessna (high wing) products there. ;)
It's still raining, hours later. That was one "off" forecast, let me tell you.
At lunch today we were enjoying talking about motorcycle stories and other misadventures, and as it often does, it came back to flying misadventures. Nathan mentioned that all we ever see of Ty in the Cub is the tail of it as he is diving down "to the weeds" and away from us in the T-6. Ty said that he always boogies out of there when we're around so we can't do anything to him, and that we will never catch him; "it's just not going to happen" is how he phrased it, I believe. The irony is that I wasn't actually going after him before. But you can bet I will now. There was a smirk and a nod out of Nathan on it too. Maybe not this week, maybe not this month. We can be patient. I may have to post a warning on the scheduling for the Cub for any students flying with Ty though. ;) Of course, I don't think it's "cool" to nor do I believe in actually terrorizing students, so we'll have to find the right time.
I've had two more things come up for May 16th. A party we were invited to by a friend in celebration of 20 years of his business being, well, in business. And another formation clinic over in Illinois. That's 9 different things in four different states on the same day now. Steve and I have about decided to sit at home and watch TV that day instead...
The very next weekend, in fact the weekend of our 13th anniversary, is shaping up to be busy too. I think we're having company stay with us, and it's the weekend of our Poker Run at the airport, too. To briefly explain to some of you who may wonder, a Poker Run is a small annual event we hold where we take playing cards sealed individually and leave them at eight nearby airports. Pilots will take their airplane and fly to each one of the airports, picking up a sealed card at each place. They end up at our home base, and at the end of the day all the envelopes are opened, and whoever has the best hand wins various door prizes. It costs money to play, and you can buy additional cards at the home base to try to get a better hand. The proceeds go towards various non-profits. It's gone to SMA, to cancer, and like this year, to a local kid's school group. It's usually fairly quiet around the home drone, because it's an event for pilots who are usually off flying to various airports to "play", so the rest of us just man the fort so to speak. This works since we spend time out there anyway, so we might as well add food, fundraising, flying and friends to the mix, right? :) Last year was the first year I didn't do the run myself, but I did get to go flying and do some aerobatics in a Pitts (and some rolls in a T-6 same day too), which was memorable. It'll also be exactly a year since my first flight in the G-model T-6 on May 24th. I can't believe it's been a year since we started this endeavor!
Well, I was supposed to do a Tuesday Top Ten on Ten Things I've Been Up To, but I tried to think of ten things I've been up to that haven't been on the blog that I still feel free talking about on the internet, and I've come up blank. Anything I've been up to that I feel like discussing, well, read down the page and there ya go. I'm cheating for the topic this time around. I'll get the next one though...
Speaking of Anniversaries, Happy Anniversary to Mom & Ernie. :)
