Still Ticking

I woke up at 7:30 a.m. in a really bad way, and came out onto the couch where I laid and slept off and on until about 11:30. I had wanted to go out to Kokomo, and had a flight later in the Baron, but I was in no condition for that. In fact, I said to Steve that I could tell I really was sick, because it was 11:30 a.m. and I hadn't even gone to the computer once. ;) But finally, after sleeping it off for awhile and a hot shower, I started feeling human again. Not too long after that I took some Dayquil and went out, against spousal advice.

I took Kaylee with me out to Kokomo and set her up in the one hangar with the Tinkerbelle movie, a drink, her scooter and a comfy chair, and she was good to go for awhile. Nathan had some visitors to his other hangar, and Chuck and I just relaxed a bit while they all did their thing. Around 3:30, Nathan had a flight to make in his T-6. There was a Veteran being honored today at a cemetery near Lafayette; his family set up a special service in honor of him, and had asked Nathan if he could fly over during the service. It was a cold, windy, gray day with low ceilings, but they got lucky because it was good enough to be able to go. I rode along in the back, bundled up in a sweatshirt, flightsuit, jacket and gloves, because there isn't much heat in the back of the T-6. It was really a relaxing flight over, and we didn't often get much above 500' over the ground which helped keep my sinuses happy. It wasn't as bumpy as either of us expected it to be, and flying low like that you get a good view of things. The trees were all losing their leaves of course, but from that angle you could see the brown tree and then in a big circle around the base of it, all the color on the ground. Going over some wooded areas made for a neat kaleidoscope of colors from a different angle. We saw some old railroad trestles and a bridge or two that had that photographic rustic quality too. The family had set up a police car and had left a light flashing, which Nathan spotted easily from the air. We flew over the cemetery, turned around and flew over again the other way before departing for home. I hope that the memorial service and our timing worked out okay for the family. As we were coming back in to land at Kokomo, we were in a slip and saw flames coming out of the exhaust briefly. So after we shut down, I go inside, Kaylee gives me a hug and says "Mommy, did you know there was fire on your airplane? I saw it. I wondered if the whole thing was going to catch on fire." When I smiled and told her it was okay, she then fell back to "Oh, I knew it would be okay" all nonchalantly.

I needed to get her home as I'd promised, so we left and went to Meijer to pick up a few quick items before heading home to finish off some chores Kaylee needed to finish up in her room.

At this point I'm ready to crash for awhile and probably for tomorrow too, try to kick this thing once and for all...
