Mt. Comfort Airshow

We're home! We got back fairly late Sunday night, worked on getting unpacked and getting things ready for school for Kaylee tomorrow, for work, catching up on emails, etc.

We had a great time at the air show! We had the trailer down there, and parked in a group with Dawn & Charlie, Chuck & Judy & Maggie, and Nathan & Jamie. I made up name badges for everybody as "crew" members of the P-51 that was in the show (Mark Watt flew it), so we could drive the golf cart around the grounds instead of having to walk everywhere. Which works nicely! That's the way to see an air show, let me tell you! We were there from Friday through late Sunday. Saturday the weather didn't cooperate for the Thunderbirds so they had to do a quickie show fairly low down, just a couple of passes, really. But Sunday the weather opened up JUST enough, and they got to do their full show. Beautiful planes. They make it look easy. There was also the jet-powered Outhouse out there running up and down the runway. Yes, I said jet-powered outhouse. I couldn't make that stuff up.

We camped on the other side of the fence from a large group of Show Semi-Trucks, which means they all had these cool lights all over them, and at night they'd run their lights and it would look a bit like Christmas over there. Only a lot hotter.

It stormed both Saturday and Sunday, but luckily not enough to really stop the show. We spent most of the time at the trailers hanging out with friends, letting the kids play, and then each day we'd head out to the flight line in the golf cart. There was also a kid area there, and the kids loved it. I am saving off the photos to Kaylee's site as I type this. One thing I have to say though, I was so proud of her for climbing so high up that rock wall. She's never done that in her life, and she just went for it like it was no big deal. When she finally quit, it wasn't because she was scared or couldn't go any more, she just got tired and decided to come down--so from Way up there, she lets go of the wall and lets herself come down to the ground by just a rope, without even blinking. For never having done it, and being five years old (and in a dress might I add), I have to admit I was really impressed. Check her out!

There were probably quite a few parents who were happy to have kid entertainment at the air show where you could still see the performers but your kids wouldn't get too bored. Sunday after it rained very hard, the whole place was a big mud pit. Once again, thank you golf cart!! Sunday we toured some of the airplanes on the inside, hung out on the flight line, watched the show from the golf cart shade, etc. It was oober muggy and hot, but then again, haven't I been saying that for 3 months straight? I'm ready for the hot thing to be done with, but not ready for the cold thing just yet! Fall sounds nice. A nice, crisp, cool Fall!

One day the kids got a plastic pan of ice water from our visiting chef, John Dale. They played in that thing for hours. It was great entertainment and all three sets of parents/grandparents were quite happy that one little rectangle of ice and water would keep them so occupied. Works for us.

Saturday night we had filet mignon on the grill, steamed corn on the cob, Italian/French bread with real butter, and for dessert, Bananas Foster with real whipping cream mixed with Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, sugar, etc. Other than burning my tongue on mine, it was REALLY good. John cooked it up for everybody. I helped with the whipping cream, and I'll tell you what, that takes a good wrist. We had all the Warbird pilots over to our tent for this supper, including some of the higher ups in charge of things. That was neat for me. The A-10 Warthog pilots were there, Corsair pilots, B-17 bomber, all of them. And the guy who is in charge of "Wings of Valor Airshows", and the guy who basically runs the war bird division for air shows. Fun stuff! Gregg Koontz (an aerobatic pilot) came over briefly, and we even had the "Gunny" and some of his crew and TV producers come over. Gunny has been in several movies, and is in the TV series "Mail Call: SNAFU" on the History Channel. Some of the guys wanted me to be the Paparazzi and take photos of Gunny while he was in our camp site, but I didn't feel like being the annoying person when he's trying to relax after two days of signing autographs--giant lines of people waiting to shake his hand and get his signature. So he comes to a tent to relax, and some chick starts snapping his photo. So I tried to do it on the sly, but only ended up with one decent photo. He peed in Chuck's bathroom and they are considering having him sign the toilet. :D lol

Across the way from us in another trailer we had the producers for the movie "Flyboys". They locked themselves out of their RV and had to climb in through a window by one guy standing on another guy's back. Now that was funny.

I can't think of too much else, though it was a busy weekend and I know I'm forgetting something....

Anyway, we're home! Check out Kaylee's site for a lot of photos of her doing stuff, and I'll have more up on the laurastants.com site under "family photos" too...
